Dell labtop did not work linksys wireless in security

Even I choose WEP, it still could not connect. When I clicked property again, it went back to "open" again. I could not set it up security. How to set security not open. How I could save the setting I changed?

i am a little confused. WPA and WEP are two different encrytion methods. i wonder if they can work simultaneously. are you connecting to your home network or is it at work?

 

also WPA-Enterprise is a very high level of encryption. it need a RADIUS server to authenticate to the network. if you are still looking for tight security then change to WPA-Personal with TKIP. for a home network WEP is secure enough

 

also please post the make and model of your wireless router

there is a difference between an unsecured network and a secured-open network. if your network says Secured - Open....it does NOT mean anyone can access it. any intruder would still need the security key. so you can relax about that.

 

 

now coming to setting up security, i need to know the make and the model number of the router

My linksys router is BEFW11S4 and version 4 model. When the router was set up open not security, dell laptop wireless could connect it, but when the router was set up security, dell laptop could not connect by using security key.

 

Any hints?

i am unable to comprehend how you managed to setup WPA-Enterprise encryption on a Linksys BEFW11S4. as far as i know it only supports one algorithm and that is WEP.

 

anyway, log in to the router config page once more and check what is the network key and also please tell me how you connect to the wireless? do you use the windows wireless manager or the utility that came with the card? which wireless card do u have?

Initially, I tried to set up WEP, but it did not connect either. I used window wireless manager. First, I set up router in security, then got the security key. The key is definitely correct because another computer not dell laptop could get wireless connection. For dell laptop, in security settings I choose WEP; for network security, I choose "open" or whatever, then typed the key, but I could not get wireless connection.

However, if the router was not set up in security, the dell laptop could connect.

I have been struggled with the troubleshooting for long time. Please help me out.

 

if another laptop is able to go online via the same router then we need to work on the dell laptop.

 

open the windows wireless manager. on the panel to the left click 'change advanced settings'. click on the wireless networks tab and remove the network name from the preferred networks list. then click on the Advanced button under preferred networks and ensure the option 'Any Available Network' is selected. click Close and then Ok. once again go back to the wireless manager and double-click on your network name. it should prompt you for the security key, enter in and click Connect. then tell me what it says against your network in the list, 'limited or no connectivity'?, 'automatic'?, 'acquiring network address'?

 

how many computers do you have (either wired or wireless) to the router?

 

are you able to go online with this laptop at a wi-fi hotspot like Starbucks?

I've been following this thread and I realize that you want to use encryption, but I suggest that you completely reset the router and leave all encryption off see if the system that's having trouble will connect then. This will help confirm if it is truly a router problem or an encryption problem. Please look at the owner's manual for your router on the proper way to reset the router and take it back to the factory default.

I tried it again. It show  "automatic", then could not connect. The laptop had no problem connect to Wi-Fi as I used it somewhere else. I have one wired computer and other wireless computer. The dell laptop could connect to this router when the router was set up no security.

at this point one thing i can suggest is that you get a firmware upgrade for the router. the router that you have is a pretty old one that was designed for wireless technology 'b'. a firmware upgrade may help. also make sure that you have the latest driver for your card

I did download firmwave and latest drive from dell, but still could not get connect. I am so frustrated.

Gina, he is able to connect to the network without encryption (as per one of his previous posts in this thread), it does not work only with encryption. Resetting the router is a good idea but I reckon its an old router and the reason why I didnt suggest a reset is, if the router fails to load its defaults after a reset then even the comps going online may have trouble
