Dell Laptop will not connect to wireless printer

My dell laptop will not connect to my Canon MX520 wireless printer. The printer itself has connected to the wifi just fine, and I have followed the troubleshooting guide that came with the printer. Any suggestions?

Chelseableslie,

In the last batch of Windows Updates, Microsoft installed Internet Explorer 11. IE11 had been causing printer problems.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Help, then click on About Internet Explorer. It should show the version there. If you have IE11, then go to control panel, Windows Update, Installed Updates, look for Internet Explorer 11. Click on Internet Explorer 11, uninstall.

Restart the computer, when prompted. Then see if your printer works.

Also check your virus program and firewall settings.

Thank you for the info Rick. I do have internet explorer 11, but when I look in Installed Updates it isn't listed. I also turned off my firewall and tried to connect to the printer wirelessly and it still did not work. Is it possible that because I just got this laptop that IE11 would not have been an update?

Thanks

Chelsea,

Windows 8.1 comes with Internet Explorer 11 and hopefully should be ok on this system.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart your computer.

Make sure the printer is not usb cable connected.

(Windows 8)Hit the Windows and x keys at the same time)

Start, control panel, programs and features, your printer, uninstall.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Stop here and please provide more information.

Make and model of your computer and operating system. 32-bit or 64-bit? Operating system in English or another language?

Firewall and virus program you're using?

Was this printer on your network working before and/or currently works for another system on your network?
If no, then can you run Network Interface and post that information back here. It will show information about your wireless routers network, which is important, like the type of security you're using and the channel.

Hi Rick,

I have removed the printer, here is the info you requested. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 17, I think the operating system is an Intel core i7, 64 bit, in English. I have McAfee for firewall and virus scanner. This is the only computer we've had the printer on so I've pasted the result from the network interface below.

There is 1 interface on the system:

    Name                   : Wi-Fi     Description            : Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-N 7260     GUID                   : 4761cfce-f747-4a32-990d-37bc679ce77e     Physical address       : 0c:8b:fd:75:f5:71     State                  : connected     SSID                   : Getzlaf     BSSID                  : 00:26:b8:ee:7c:c8     Network type           : Infrastructure     Radio type             : 802.11n     Authentication         : WPA2-Personal     Cipher                 : CCMP     Connection mode        : Auto Connect     Channel                : 1     Receive rate (Mbps)    : 144     Transmit rate (Mbps)   : 144     Signal                 : 95%     Profile                : Getzlaf

Hosted network status  : Not available

Let me know if I missed anything, or if you need more info.

Thanks for the help :)

Chelseableslie,

Your WPS2 security, is this WPA2-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal) or WPA2-AES?

Chelseableslie,

You can try an ipconfig /all but not sure it it shows.

You can find out by login to your wireless router. How to login to your wireless router

Chelsea,

Most wireless printers work best with WPA/WPA2-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal)

I would use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11, in my wireless router. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

Here is the walk through, with pictures.

Setting up/Troubleshooting a Wireless Network

Once your wireless router is setup, then we can work on installing the printer.

Chelsea,

I need to know the make and model of your computer and operating system. 32-bit or 64-bit?

Also provide the virus program and firewall you're using.

In the meantime, make sure the printer is not usb cable connected to the computer, run Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart the computer.

Windows 8(hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time)

Start, control panel, programs and features, your printer, uninstall.

Restart the computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

This will give us a clean start with installing the printer, once you provide the information I requested above.

Chelsea,

I was looking at CANON'S WEBSITE and cannot find your model. Are you sure about the model number? I cannot find a Canon MX520.

I also need to know if your have Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 installed. 64-bit system with McAfee.

We will need to download the drivers from CANON'S WEBSITEthat match your operating system. Install the drivers, choose network, new installation and follow the instructions. It should prompt you to connect the printer or give you instructions to follow. The computer should then be able to see and communicate with the printer. I can help find the drivers with the correct model of the printer and what operating system is installed. If you're not sure of your operating system and the 64-bit, Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here.

You'll have to read...

Allow a printer past McAfee
