Dell Latitude XPi CD M166ST -- upgrade options?

I'm one of those people that can't just leave good enough alone... I have to improve everything I get!

Anyway, I just picked up a nearly perfect Dell Latitude XPi CD M166ST for a great price, and I want to improve on it. I'm already ordering another 32mb ram module for it (so I'll have 64mb total). I'm shopping for a hard drive that is larger than the 2gig drive that came with it.

Now, what I'm most interested in doing is upgrading the processor, or the motherboard, or just about anything inside of it! Can anyone help me in this area? This computer is in great condition, but I'd love to put a faster processor in it! I'm fairly experienced with computer hardware, but only desktops. Laptops are new for me, and I'm excited to get my hands dirty!

Hi,

There is not much you can upgrade apart from a bigger faster HDD and more memory. The CPU was soldered in, and you already have the fastest one. It will work better with this done,( the upgrades ) but still wont do much compared to a later machine.

Thanks Chris!

I was afraid nobody would have anything to tell me :smileywink: I wish laptops were as easy to upgrade as desktops... A simple case and a cheap motherboard and processor combo can offer endless options!

Is it possible to replace the entire board in this computer? I know I've seen screenless, keyboardless laptops on ebay sell for very little... Would a faster Latitude series laptop board fit? The screen and case are in exceptional shape (as are the internals...) so it may be worth it to do such a swap if it's possible.

Hi,

You can replace the board, but only with a slower one.You have the end of the line.

Shucks! Oh well... for the price I paid, it's still a great machine! Thanks for the info.
