Windows 7 decided to get in on the act while I was eating lunch and guess what? All is working fine, the headphones now appear permanently in 'Devices and Printers' and the cats are playing with the Belkin adapter on the floor!
Thanks for you input - in following your suggestions I've learned a lot about my computer and bluetooth and then suddenly "the problem fixed itself" Windows took quite a while to locate and download drivers - but all is well! Many thanks!
Now to try to find out what is bugging my new Android tablet - which I bought for educational purposes so I can't complain if I now have to learn about how it works!
Uninstall and reinstall Bluetooth drivers on the computer.
Click Start, Run. When the Run text window opens, type "devmgmt.msc" and click "OK" to open the Device Manager.
Browse the menu of device categories in the Device Manager and find "Bluetooth Devices." Expand this category by clicking the "+" sign next to it.
Right click on Bluetooth and select uninstall and Check the box “Delete driver software for this device”, click ok and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall Bluetooth drivers.
Restart the computer.
Now, Download and install the Bluetooth drivers from below mentioned link:
When the File Download window appears, click Save this program to disk (Windows XP users, click Save) and click OK. The Save In: window appears.
From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file name icon appears on your desktop.
Install:
Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R228749.exe.
The Self-Extractor window appears.
Click OK or Continue.
The Self-Extracting Driver Installation window appears and prompts to extract files to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R228749.
Leave all of the default settings and click Unzip or OK. If the directory doesn't exist, you'll be prompted to create one. Click Yes. A Self Extractor window appears and indicates C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R228749 files were extracted.
Click OK.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions in the window.
That was a great help - many thanks. It solves the computer's problem every time! but then passes a problem to the bluetooth adapter. I can have one or the other working without a 'need to troubleshoot' warning. I've tried several times with the same result every time - fix the computer driver for bluetooth 365 module and the adapter driver has a problem as soon as I plug it in.. Fix the adapter driver problem and the computer's 365 module develops a driver problem.
I have noted that bluetooth actually works just fine when a driver problem with the Dell 365 Module exists and will not work when a driver problem with the Belkin adapter exists. So my next question is - what is the purpose of the 365 Module and can will bluetooth work if it is deleted from my computer?
It's a Belkin bluetooth adapter F8TO16ng. I've been to Broadcom and updated to their latest driver - which is what caused the problem originally.
What I infer from your post is that I can use either the Belkin or the Dell Module - that I've been trying to kill one bird with two stones so far.
OK - the Belkin adapter is back in its box and the Dell 365 Module shows in Device Manager as working correctly. So - how do I get the Dell 365 Module to operate? The only place I can find that acknowledges its existence is Device Manager.
Hi Natakuc4
Thanks for your input!
Yes - both are Broadcom, I've discovered and you confirm. Certainly the one will not sit with the other - one or the other will show a fault with the drivers.
As above and as Rajesh has suggested, I'd like to try to activate the Dell 365 Module but do not know how. I was not aware of its existence until I plugged in the Belkin adapter and even now can only find it in Device Manager.

Hi Carl,
I would like to know the Bluetooth adapter name/model number so that I can find out the drivers for you.
I would recommend you to use internal Bluetooth instead of an external Bluetooth adapter.
Awaiting your response!

The Belkin adapter is a Broadcom bluetooth adapter (just rebranded):

Likewise the Dell Wireless 365 is a Broadcom adapter.
Its possible the drivers are sharing some common components. Try the Broadcom Bluetooth Update:
