Dell Wireless WLAN Utility is locked. Can't make changes.
Used the Dell Wireless utility on my new Precision M4400 at home with no problems for a week. I took my laptop to work, disabled the radio, and plugged in an Ethernet connection, which worked fine. At the end of the day I unplugged the Ethernet and decided to test my wireless connection at work. First I enabled the radio. The Dell wireless utility did not react automatically like it did at home, so I clicked on the icon in the task bar. The utility opened up. I checked the Site Monitor tab first, which found a very strong connection to my office wireless router. I then clicked on the Wireless Network tab and found that none of the available networks were listed in the main window. There was a gray checkmark next to "Let this tool manage your wireless". There are green checkmarks next to "show utility" and "enable radio". I am unable to uncheck the gray checkmark. Also, I am unable to check the "ADD" or "Options" buttons, even though they are not grayed-out. Dell's help suggested that I disable the "Disable upon wire connect setting", but I cannot get to that setting (I'm guessing it would be somewhere on the Wireless Network tab). I also tried double clicking on my wireless connection on the "Site Monitor" tab, but that only shows me some diagnositcs and settings and doesn't let me make changes. My office wireless does have security enabled, but I can't get to any window that would let me enter the key/password. I then tried to use my Windows Wireless utility, but it said that another utility was managing my wireless and therefore was locked up. My final solution was to disable the Dell Wireless utility in my startup settings and I was then able to manage my wireless via the Windows utility. I liked the way that the Dell utility worked and I would like to use it, however, even when I reactivate it, I still have the same problem.........nothing listed in the main window of the "Wireless Networks" tab, even though the network is found and is strong on the "Site Monitor" tab.
