Desktop seeing available network but won't connect

Hi Foks, new to the forum.

I have a BT hub at home and today tried to connect a Dell Dimension to it using a TP-Link mini wireless usb adapter. When installed the desktop was able to see the hub and had 4 bars but wouldn't connect. When the network code was entered it just made as if it was going to connect but it went on and on and eventually after about 45 seconds just went back showing available networks. I was surprised it didn't throw up an error or offer to investigate and fix....nothing....just won't connect. I am obviously using the correct network passkey from my router and am at a loss. Any ideas.

Thanks

Hi Rick.

Not at home at the min but it's possible that  a trial version of McAfee is lurking somewhere within. I'm just seeing another thread on here now that relates to McAfee and wireless problems. I'm fairly new to this so didn't know that. Is McAfee a sworn enemy of wireless connections then? Should I just disable/delete it?

paul1802,

Before we try anything, do you have McAfe installed?

I'll disable McAfee anyway Rick but this particular desktop hasn't been connected to the internet in possibly over a year so that's not gonna be the issue in this instance. I should have had the cop on to try disabling the AV software yesterday but for some reason didn't. I also didn't switch the router on/off after I had installed the wireless adapter so between the 2 hopefully I'll find the resolution. If it's neither of these then it must be some setting within the desktop itself.
