Dial up connections unable to establish

I was able to make a connection once.  But then, based on an email from Dell, took several steps to remove a "bxx5" error message.  Once that was removed, I was no longer able to connect to the internet using my dial up.  I have done a reinstall repair, per advice from Dell, and have removed all viruses and parasites as well. 

When I try to make a new dial up I chose create one manually, and then it takes me to a page with an option already marked - broadband.  The computer does have an ethernet but I need to use a telephone connection for the time being.  I have checked device manager, the modem is there.  When I switch over to check modem and phones I get a phone and modem contraol can' t be opened, problem starting telephony source.  I don't know if this is the problem or not. 

I don't want to network, I just want to create a dial up to my internet provider.
