Go to Start > Network and Inernet Connections > Network Connections, right click on the Wireless Network Connection and select "View available wireless networks".

To get the wireless network icon to appear in System Tray, double click on the Wireless Connection and check the box to show the icon in the notification area.

Thanks for the quick reply....

Therein lies my problem, when I go to "Network Connections"... there is no "Wireless Network Connection" Icon there to right click on.....
(even though Device Mgr and Client Mgr both show the device connected and working properly).

MS bulletin313242  implies corrupt drivers could do this, i followed reloading latest drivers (even though Device Mgr indicated USB adapter was working properly).  Proxim bulletin shows adapter to be XP compliant with WZC and I checked that WZC was started per bulletin.

I need to figure out how to get a "Wireless Network Connection" Icon to appear so I can right click on it.

The icon will not appear if there is no Wireless Connection shown in the Network Connections box. There is no reason for it to load unless Windows recognizes that there is a wireless network adapter presetn.  Unplug the wireless USB adapter, uninstall the drivers, then reinstall the drivers and plug the adapter back in and see if that gets it there.

I don't think that a MAC restriction list in an access point would render the access point invisible to wireless clients whose MAC address isn't included in the list of permitted addresses. Perhaps that's wrong.

Is the replacement USB adapter's MAC address listed in the AP-1000's allowed list?

I have opened Control Pnl>System>Hardware>Device Mgr>Network Adapters>Orinoco USB card>Driver....and "Unistalled" (In driver details I wrote down drivers and paths)
Orinoco adpter no longer appears under "Network Adapters

Once un-installed, I used "windows explorer" to delete associated .sys & .dll files noted from the driver detials above.

I have active a AP1000 & a RG-1000 since I live out in the country I have opened them up to accept anything and with no encryption keys.

Win XP has drivers built in for the Orinoco USB adapter...so I reboot the D4550..once ready, I plug in the USB adapter...XP >"found new Hardware...Orinoco USB card"...wait few seconds..XP>"Your New hardware isinstalled and ready for use"
I can now see the Orinoco USB Card under the "Network Adpaters" double clicking brings up properties window and "Status" displays "This device is working properly"
I can now load Orinoco Client Mgr and run card diagnostics (all diag passes OK)
It appears that adapter was recognised and put into service properly by XP, but....
Open Control Pnl>Network Connections...NO "Wireless Network Connection" Icon to be found???
Registry problem????

PS:I have three (3) Orinoco USB adapters..all behaving the same...Since Orinoco actually uses the same PC card in all units, I have actually taken one USB client card out and put it into my laptop to ensure the wireless card actually works (using now as PC wireless card to write this from laptop).

I doubt that a BIOS upgrade will solve the problem, but it is worth a try.  Do any other USB devices work this computer?  I have never used a wireless USB network adapter, mainly because I have found other USB network adapters to be flakey, but it almost sounds like the adpater, while present, is not turned on.  Does the adapter come with utility software that can be used to turn it on and off?

Yes other USB devices work (such as camera, flash, pda sync..etc) all OK except for this adpater now.
When I got the D4550 in 2002 I installed the type of adapter with no problems (XP OEM ver). Sometime ago (6 months, after many XP udates includin SP2) I re-arranged my network and noticed that there was no "Wireless Network Connection" Icon in CTL-PNL>NET-CONN's..but the adpater was still working fine so I left it working off the AP-1000...
Now that the USB carrier evidently failed, so when I put another like Orinoco USB adapter (other MAC) the wireless connect did not automatically come back up. The Orinoco Client Mgr will test the card and it will let me disable/enable the radio...but with XP the wireless configuration setting must be changed from CTL-PNL>NET-CONN>Wireless Connection and this is where I stumped.
