Dimension 2350...I Need help with internet connectivity with a Ethernet/NIC connection...

Plz...help...dimension 2350 and I have optonline. I currently have the motorola modem connected via USB port but it says you can connect with the Ethenet/NIC connection but I cant figure out if it can. I look at the pic. It gave me and looks like it should work but pics dont say everything. How can I tell if it will suport. it says many newer computers come with a ethernet/NIC installed but how can I tell if I have that...Thanks for the help...I have had optonline for a while but was always wodnering why the intenet wasnt as fast is it could be and found out today...

What speed does optonline claim to give provide you?   If your modem is USB 1.1 it will connect at 8 Mbps.  If your optonline service is slower than 8 Mpbs, then you are not even using the full potential of the USB port.   Connecting a 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps ethernet adapter to a service that provides less than 8 Mbps, will not result in any speed faster than 8 Mbps.

thanks...but your saying connecting that connecting the modem witht eh Ethernet port wont be faster than as if connecting with the USB port? I now have cable(optonline) and it says that the USB connection is slower than the Ethernet port...

The 2350 has an integrated ethernet network adapter.   The connector looks like a telephone jack, but is much larger.  It is located on the back of your computer tower next to the 4 USB ports-  see the following diagram:
 
 
Since your inernet connection is likely much slower than either the USB port or the ethernet port, it is not likely that connecting by ethernet will result in any significant speed increase.

i did a speed check and it says 5MBps upstream and 2MBps downstream but it says that if you connect with the ethernet port it is faster and it says up to 15MBps...the modem is a "motorola SURFboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem" that my device manager says...but it comes with a cable to connect via the network/etherent port.

If optonoline does in fact support speeds up to 15 Mbps, then yes, you will get faster speeds with ethernet.   Try it and see.  Note that when you make the change over to ethernet, make sure you unplug the USB cable, turn everything off.  Wait 5 minutes, then turn on the modem first and wait another 5 minutes.  Then, with the ethernet cable plugged into the modem and the computer, turn on the computer.  The default settings of Windows should automatically connect to the modem and the internet.

i did that but the modem wont connect...the pc says it cant even find the modem...

To help troubleshoot the problem, with the ethernet cable plugged into the modem, and after resetting the network as I described in my first reply, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

I turn off hte pc and took out the usb port on the modem and the pc...I then did what you said but when i went to trouble shoot itthe modem doesnt even show up in device manager so i cant trouble shoot it...Did you mean have it connected by both USB and Ethernet cuz it says not to do that...well this is what happened when i typed ipconfig/all without the usb port...

The ipconfig output is showing that your ethernet adapter is not connected to anything.  Are you sure the ethernet cable works?  Do the link lights next to the jacks where you plug in the ethernet cable light up on both the modem and the computer when the ethernet cable is connected and both devices are powered on?

the lights on the pc dont light up and i didnt look on the modem...i just tryed with it not attached to the pc and it didnt light up...also when the modem is on the power, receive, send, and online lights light up and with teh USB the PC activity light flashes but with the Ethernet teh light is alwasy off no flashing...

You either have a bad cable, a bad ethernet port on the router or a bad ethernet network card.

Bad Cable - replace the cable
Bad router port - try a different port
Bad ethernet card - run the diagnositcs program for the card.

it says its not on Chip CPU "Unsupported test for BCM44..." everything else passes
