Dimension 2400 Resource CD

Question

I have a Dimension 2400 but for some reason I lost my Resource CD. I looked at the download section for my computer but I saw a lot more than just one of each. Do I have to find the CD or will I find what I need it that area? What ones specificly do I need to download? (Im on a different computer.)

Everything you would need in terms of device drivers will be found on the Dell Support site.  The resource cd makes it easier to install drivers for devices specific to your computer, but is  not necessary.  The 2400 has integrated video, so there is only one video driver on the site for your machine.  It also has an integrated ethernet network adapter and integrated sound, so again, only one device driver will apply for each of these.  If you have a wireless network adapter, you will need to know which particular wireless adapter you ordered.  There may also be several option for the modem.  On the Dell support site, if you enter your Service Tag, you will find a link to the Original Configuration of your machine, which may help you indentify devices.   Steve

Unless you ordered something special as an extra add-on to your computer, which only you would know, the network adaper, video adapter, and sound card are all integrated.

You said there was only one but when I look at the downloads it shows 3 Audio Drivers, 4 Network Drivers ,and 5 Video Drivers how do I know what one to download?

If you plug in your system tag #, it should pare down the list.

I have found this doesn't always help pare down the list, but it certainly is worth trying.  Example: the 4600 I'm typing this on has, after entering the service tag, 12 video drivers and 4 audio drivers.  If I didn't know what I had I would have no clue which driver to download, so I do sympathize with the dilemna many users have about chosing what driver is needed.

Which drivers are the 'rest of your drivers'?  Go to the Dell Support site.  Enter your Service Tag.  Find the link to Original System Configuration, copy the results and paste them in a message here.  Better yet, do you have the original invoice that came with your computer?  If so, list all of the information here.   Steve

They sure don't tell you much in England, do they. Which drivers do you still need? If you go into Device Manager, which devices are still shown as problem devices after you have installed the drivers I already suggested?

Yes, this should install the chipset drivers.  Once they are installed, report the other problem devices. Steve

If the SM Bus controller is listed as a problem device, it means that you haven't installed the chipset drivers. You never said, but it looks like you have recently reinstalled Windows (this would have been helpful information when you first posted) and did not install the chipset drivers as the first drivers installed after reinstalling Windows. Once the chipset drivers are installed, there will likely be many more devices listed in Device Manager as problem devices. Tell us what those are once the chipset drivers are installed.
