Dimension 5150 Conexant modem/port problem -HELP!

Hi, I purchased my new Dimension 5150 in Jan this year and started off by using the internal modem with AOL for dial-up access to the internet. Without any message, my connection was lost. There is no problem with the phone socket (I have tested it with another PC and it dials up fine) and I have tested the phone cable, that is also fine. I went through the already installed modem fixer software but I keep getting different messages. Mainly that there is a port conflict and I should check that I haven't installed anything else like a fax etc which I haven't apart from a scanner which I uninstalled to see if that worked. I signed up for broadband thinking it would solve my problem as I didn't need the internal modem. Well this also doesn't work. Has anyone else had this problem.
If I go back to factory settings will it solve my problem. If I change the port the modem is on it makes no difference.

First, if you have broadband, you are not using the Conexant modem.  You interface to the broadband modem either via the Ethernet (8 pin RJ45) connection or via a USB connection.

The Conexant modem is ONLY for dial up use over a regular voice telephone line.

If you change from dial up to broadband, you must also delete any Dial up network connection in Interenet Explorer so it will "look" for the broadband connection.  This option is in Tools/Internet Options/Connections.
