Dimension 8250 and Intel 100 running at 100/Full Duplex

I cannot get this pc to run at 100Mb/s Full Duplex.  I get a link indicator both on the switch and on the nic but I'm not able to ping anything on the network....

Here are the steps I've taken to solve this problem.

1)Change patch cable.

2) Tried a different switch.

3) Upgraded Nic (intel 100/pro M) drivers

4) Removed Nic from device manager and restarted.  XP reloaded the drivers at startup.

5) ran a repair of Windows XP (per dell tech support)

6) Verified IP settings

All other pc's connect to the switch just fine.  My last option is to do a full clean install of XP (per dell tech support).   I really would not like to do that for a network card that works fine at 10Mbs/half duplex.   Any help would be great !

thank you

voidman,

There is not much left to try, but give this shot: Through Device Manager select the properties of the NIC and click the Advanced tab.  Change the property of "Connection Type" from AutoSense to 100 Mbps Full_Duplex.

If that does not help, try a new NIC.  They run $5-10 and would be inexpensive troubleshooting.

Are you sure that port on your switch is set to Auto?  Is it possible the switch port you are connect to was hard set to 10 Mb for troubleshooting something and never set back to auto?

Thanks...  I'll try a new nic..

In responce to both questions:

1) I've tried manually setting 100Mb/full duplex on the nic.

2) I've verified the settings on the switch and it is set for 100Mbs/full duplex and not auto....

Thank you for you help on this..    Question would I loose the warrenty if I open up the box???

voidman,

To be perfectly honest, I don't know.  I have never scrutinized the Dell warranty that closely - which is to say I never read it.

I suppose to be politically correct in this situation you should contact Customer Service and demand a new NIC under the warranty, which they would probably send to you.  They might send a tech out to install it.

If you are pressed for time and can get your hands on a new NIC, if it was me, I would go for it.  There is no seal on the machine which will be broken if you open it.  So I guess what I am saying is that they would never know if you did open it.  If the new NIC does not solve the problem, put the old one back in and start calling.  But that's me.

Are the machines which you are trying to ping running at full duplex?  If they are not they will not hear the PING.

Do you have other machines on your network running @ full duplex and can ping each other?

Full duplex can not talk to half duplex.

What is the brand of the ethernet c controller? (3Com, or Intel Pro ...)

Voidman,

Odd. We have one of these systems in our office (We use Precision Workstations on the floor)

I checked, and the office manager says her system is running at full Duplex.

Droid is right, having a switch and a client card mis matched will cause issues.

Can you please post what switch you are using? Do you have POE (Power Over Ethernet) enabled on that port?

Can you enter the config of the switch and post the switch port settings and firmware revision?

Hope this helps.

Greetings,

I have verified that the switch is set to 100/Full Duplex and the Nic is set to the same speed.  I do have other workstations connected to the switch with the same settings (on both ends).  I'll be trying a new nic soon.  The switch is a 3com 3900.  The NIC in question is a intel 100/pro M.  The other workstations are using 3com and linksys NIC's and responding with no issues.

Thank you for the advise and I'll get back to you guys soon..

Thanks again

VMan,

Does your switch have a GiG interface? What firmware revision are you at?

Thanx

Sounds like this is the same type of issue that cropped up with the Dim 8100 and the 3Com onboard NIC.  I just purchased an 8250 and I can't get it to connect to my hub at any speed.  I went through this with the 8100 and finally gave up on the onboard NIC and installed a new one.  Worked like a charm.  I just  dropped by the forum to see if there were issues with the 8250 onboard NIC.  Guess I got my answer!

mfwizard,

While your knowledge of old issues concerning TCPIP and Dell systems is impressive, I personally would not knee-jerk react to one post.

Lets see how this switch is setup 1st, and go from there.

Yes, we had the issue you mentioned in out shop, but guess what. It was a 3COM driver issue, not a Dell hardware issue. We worked very closely with Dell as we were one of the 1st customers to stumble across it. We got a fix very quickly; and I know enough about TCPIP that I was impressed the fix was so fast  :)

Thanx

While your faith in Dell is commendable, I have spent 3 days trying to get the onboard NIC to work.  I finally stuffed a LinkSys 10/100 card in, disabled the onboard NIC, and got my system to connect.  I have a Speedstream Router, and Dell never gave me an answer before as to whether their onboard NICs would function with that router.  I realize they don't have time to test with every manufacturer and model, so I didn't bother with their tech support.  If they didn't know before, the chances of them knowing this time were slim to none.  That's the reason for my earlier comments.
