Do I need anything more to make my wireless work?

Question

I can find bits and pieces of answers to my questions, but not all! I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1150 with a wireless card, and a separate DLink wireless router, DI 624.  Nothing else was purchased....   I could connect to the wireless network with good signal strength, etc, but could not get on to the internet?  Do I need a wireless adapter?   Dell and DLink Technical support have been unable to assist me fully.

Your D-Link wireless router needs to be connected to the internet either through a cable modem (broadband) or a DSL modem (a dialup service).  Read up about getting connected at this link.

Thanks - I can connect through my wireless modem, and it appears all systems are go, but can't actually get anywhere....

Julestj, what internet service provider are you using?  connecting to the router with you laptops wireless card will not be enough if the router is not connected to a provider

Hmmmm...my internet provider is Comcast, and I wouldn't be surprised if the router wasn't connected to it - dlink seemed unable to offer any ideas.

Alright ...  you're using a cable modem to connect to comcast I assume.  can you tell me what this modem is connected to?  also, what kind of connection is it, USB or ethernet

Also if you had a computer connected to the Comcast cable modem and then just plugged the D-Link WAN port to the cable modem, you need to power off the cable modem for 10 seconds or more, then power it back on with the D-Link connected to it and it will find the D-Link's MAC address and talk.  Cable modems only look at what is connected to it once at power up.

I am currently using DI-724P+ as my wireless router. Assuming your router interface is same as mine:   a. WLAN on (steady green) should mean that your wireless LAN connection is OK b. WAN on (blinking green) should mean that your connection to internet or ISP is OK

Thank you.  I have determined that the router itself is connected - it's my internet connection that is the problem.  Somehow I need assistance with getting my router to talk to the iSP, comcast - I'm sure it's a matter of simple settings, but so far, no luck.  Any help?

Hi  julestj...   Hope that this helps in troubleshooting further.  Is your wired internet connection (via the DLink router) working?   If wired (via router) is ok but wireless (via router) fails, then it should be the router's wireless configuration problems. If both wired (via router) and wireless (via router) fails, but wired (via modem) is ok, then you may have to check with your ISP if there are any special configurations needed.
