Do USB to Ethernet Adapters Exist for Broadband Modems?
Some DSL and cable modems provide only a single USB port for connecting to a home network. However, older Ethernet-based broadband routers, network switches and desktop computers lack USB ports.
Is it possible to install some kind of USB to Ethernet adapter to join the modem to an Ethernet-only device?
I recently acquired a D-Link wireless Router (DLINK DIR-655) then I had a wireless broadband modem which had an RJ45 connector. However I now have a new Wireless Broadband Modem which came with a USB connector. My Wireless Router only has ETHERNET port. Any ideas/advise on how to connect my new USB Wireless Modem to My ETHERNET Wireless Router.

If you got the modem from your ISP, my personal recommendation would be to see if they can provide you with one that either is ethernet only, or has both ethernet and USB ports. If you do get a modem with both USB and ethernet, keep in mind that most of those modems will only "listen" to the USB port if it is in use so you can't use both ports at the same time.
I believe there are USB to ethernet adapters, however, I have not actually seen any or heard from someone using one so I don't know if there are any problems with them.

The only solution to your problem is to buy a modem with an ethernet port. There is no device that you can add that will allow the router to connect to the modem by USB.

Reading over the Quick Start Guide (the User Manual wasn't loading for some reason) it does not appear that this device will help. It looks like it is meant to allow a single USB device like an external drive or a printer be used by multiple computers on a local network.
What you would need would be an actual adapter that converts from a USB connection into an RJ45 (ethernet) connection. Even better is to just get a modem that has an ethernet port so you don't have to run extra software just to get the connection.

As Larry said, this device will not do what you want. There are such things as USB to ethernet adapters, but they will not work do what you want either. This is becasue what they do is convert a USB port on a computer to an ethernet port. This works on a computer because the computer can run a device driver to make the conversion. It will not work to convert a USB port on a modem to an ethernet port because the modem will cannot run a device driver to make the make conversion. The best solution for you is to see if you can exchange the modem for one that has an ethernet port or one with both an ethernet port an USB port.

I knew I was overlooking something when it came to the USB to ethernet adapter. It just didn't sound like the solution for this, but I couldn't think of why. Thanks for the clarification on that, Steve. ;)

Thanks again Larry / Steve. You comments have been most enlightening and educating. Its a pity no device to do this conversion exist from what you say. I would have thought this would be available considering that devices exist that need these conversions.
In answer to your advice that I go for a modem with the RJ45 I am stuck with the USB modem cause the provider does not have modems with ETHERNET, just USB modems.
I wish I had the skills and competence to come up with this USB-to-ETHERNET adapter. It is obvious that its needed. In my search for this type of device I have seen lots of people searching for the same thing. Pity.
