Does my C400 even HAVE an a NIC?

Hello, I was digging through our corporate storage room and found a c400, serivce tag CS87T11, just sitting there hanging out by itself. I snagged it and started playing around with it. I noticed that it has an RJ45 input jack (ethernet) on the back, but I can't get any thing out of it. If I plug a cable into it I do NOT get a link light. Windows does not see an ethernet controller either. I found this PDF (http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/latit/c400_spec.pdf) which says that all C400s have an integrated 3COM network interface controller thing. So what is going on here?

ChrisMOG,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

I did not see a nic when I looked at your system's order  screen.  You can verify this by running a hardware scan on your system.

  1. Start from the main support site.
  2. Click on the Services & Warranties link.
  3. Choose the Current System Configuration tab.
  4. Accept the agreement.

Is it normal on a c400 to have the ethernet port on the back yet have no actual hardware to drive that port?

ChrisMOG,

The onboard 10/100 NIC was standard in the C400. That's why it's not listed separately in Dell's "original system configuration". But since the machine was originally purchased with an Advanced Port Replicator, it's possible the the onboard NIC has been disabled in the BIOS. Tap the "F2" key while the system is starting and the Dell logo screen is showing. That should get you into the BIOS System Setup. Press Alt-P to navigate to the setup screen that lists devices. If the Ethernet device isn't enabled, you can enable it there.

You can download the C400 User's Guide (a Windows Help file) here, and the C400 Service Manual here. The service manual can also be viewed online.  Information about the BIOS System Setup is in the User's Guide.

I checked that and its set to "Enabled". I even reset the BIOS back to defaults and no go. Windows nor Linux will find the NIC controller :/
