DSL connectivity comes and goes...please help

Question

I was finally able to get DSL this year (a year ago i was 1000 feet too far from the central office), and now i am having connectivity issues - connection comes and goes at will! Verizon has been extremely unhelpful (an understatement, really). after 6 phonecalls and various alterations of hook-up the result is still the same.   what's bizarre is that even if i have no internet connection, under 'network connections', LAN is always listed as 'connected,' and at full speed!   please help - am i still too far from the cetral office maybe (of course Verizon would never disclose that) but then why is LAN alwasy connected? i'd hate to pay for DSL if i can only use it 20% of the time, and another year of dial up just might kill me. thanks in advance!

Is your computer just connected to the DSL modem? or is there a router, too? What computer do you own, and what operating system is it running? Win XP? 2000? These little details, help...

dell demension 3000, windows XP. connected directly to modem (Westell Versalink 327), no router. thanks very much for answering.

lan always shows connected because you are always connected to the modem at full speed. whether the modem itself is actually connected or working is an entirely different matter.

thanks - i will definitely try that. come to think of it, yesterday was a little cooler and the connection was a little better, don't know if it means anything. i will let you know if it worked.

When I read filter,are we talking about a (Micro Filter) that is connected to the phone jack.                                       Charlie

so here's the follow-up to my conudrum: went out today and bought RCA filters to replace all filters around the house (DSL working prior to filter change). then, as soon as i changed them over - there was no connection at all. i was stumped!   then i started rechecking the connections next to my PC to make sure that all were plugged in all the way. my connection was as follows - i had a 2:1 adapter plugged into the phone jack. one of the jacks had a DSL phone cable, the other had a filter to which my modem was connected.    SO, as soon as i disconnected the filter with the modem line from 2:1, DSL started working. then i tried, several times, to reconnect the filter+modem, and DSL would kick out immediately. disconnet them - and it worked again. very peculiar. i guess that's the solution to my problem. i will sit on these RCA filters for couple of days, then try to switch to the old filters. if DSL is still working, then i'll return the RCA filters (at $15 each it really added up).   while i am thrilled my DSL is finally working, any idea why this would be happening?   thanks again for all the advice! nina

If memory serves, I think the filters are supposed to be installed on the phone line, not the modem line? But, I have cable internet access so, what do I know? Have you tried a new 2:1 adapter?

oh, i did not make myself clear. i never had dsl modem connected through a filter. i had my old dial-up modem connected through the filter so that i could still use the fax. the wall jack was the original phone jack that i had in my house, 2:1 adapter was the one sent to me by verizon. i did follow their installation guide. that's the set up that i had, below. i do thank you for the junky filter test - i guess i will hold onto my RCA filters ($15 in Best Buy), and will look for them in home depot (didn't even know they had them).

so yes, if anything is attached to the other jack in the 2:1, i.e. filter with either dial-up modem line or a phone, DSL kicks out. i can't tell you how delighted i was to find my connection on this morning - i guess i just won't fax and use the internet at the same time.
