DSL For Dummies (me!)

I have the Inspiron 5100 - I had DSL through Comcast using their modem with no trouble whatsoever.  Now though, I want to use my computer at work and when I connected to the DSL modem there, it does not work.  I get a message flashing on my tool bar saying it is disconnected.  I called Dell, spent over an hour on the phone with them with no resolution.  I then called the DSL provider who went through my system with me for over an hour with again, NO resolution.  Can anyone help me on this??  Thanks.

More info - how are you connecting to the DSL modem at home and also at work - are you sure it is a DSL modem at work or a full network?  What are the TCP/IP requirements for both locations?

my first instinct is a bad cable at work, but it could be number of things.

Answering john's questions will help us determine the cause.

Hello - I am connecting at home through a cord from my computer to the modem to the tv cable.  At work, it is through my computer to a modem to the telephone.  I have no idea what the TCP etc setting are at either location.  I spoke with my boss yesterday who has Windows XP but a H.P. computer and she just plugs the cable into her computer and is immediately online.  We are not networked at work.

Ok, at home you do not have DSL, which is a dial-up digital service, but you have cable broadband, which is as you say, your computer's network port connected to the cable modem, which is connected to the cable.  Your TCP/IP settings for this connection are under the Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network and Dialup Connections - your network card name.  Click that, then click Properties, then double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).  It is no doubt set to obtain an IP address automatically.  Which works so don't change it.

Now at work, I'm still not sure if you are connecting the same network port to a DSL modem to the phoneline, or if you mean the modem port on your notebook to the telephone line.

Please clarify again.  The more clear info you can give us helps us immensely in trying to get you going.

See, that's why I called it "for dummies...."sorry.  So at work, I hook up to the modem from my computer and the modem goes to our telephone carrier - I hope that is more clear - I'm sorry, I'm very new at this.

Ok, so at work there must be an ISP your company has account(s) with.  You need to get with whoever handles computer support at your company and get the phone number to dial and an account in your name so you can set up your dialing properties to call the ISP and log you into it.
