DSL Internet Connection Disconnects When Idle

Question

My DSL connection disconnects on me when idle for more than 1/2 hour or so. I have changed modem, checked DSL and phone line, had tech to the house. I've set all my USB ports to not turn off to save power. My computer is set not to hybernate. My monitor is set to stay on. I do not have a phone on the DSL line at all. I have not installed new programs, I do not have programs running in the background. If I leave a few sites open and leave my computer for a while, I'll come back and have to reset the modem every time. Strange thing is that if I also leave my 'Itunes' program playing a radio stream, the connection will stay on all day, no problem. This leaves me to believe Internet is disconnecting because it's idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows XP on a 2-year old Dell Dimension.

Wow--my daughter is having a similar problem, in that she loses her ip address on her apt dsl connection and then gets repeated 'ip conflict' messages. I thought she was nuts when she told me if she leaves her itunes running she doesn't have the problem...I would love to hear from someone who can explaing this one!

Hi Readinbead, I don't lose my IP address (that I know of). I never had 'IP conflict' though.I bet she's having the same problem as me, in that if iTunes is not on, modem sees it as idle and disconnects. I've got another viewer helping me. Sounds like he knows what he's doing. I'm working on it later today. If it fixes it, I'll let you know (in case you haven't seen the message he posted for me here). D.

Denise, are you using an usb modem and using IE?

I'm asking because your problem sounds similiar to folk with dialup where somewhere under properties of your connection, a checkbox was ticked to disconnect when idle for x minutes.

sorry I can't be more specific as I use a router.

Many thanks! I'd be interested in hearing of any possible solution. She's got her landlord (sooner or later) setting her up with a unique ip address...but I'm afraid she'll still be disconnecting all the time. She's very computer illiterate, so I'm trying to make this as easy as possible for her....as I tend to be her long-distance tech support :)
