Ethernet Card issue following HD R&R

HD failed.  I have removed and replaced with a new HD.   Software reinstallation from CDs provided with the DELL computer when I purchased it appears to be complete.  I say 'appears' since I am not sure if I missed something and that is the reason for my current issue...  internet connection.

Everything looks up and running, but when I try to connect to the internet, I can't.

Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager reveals:
(1) a network adapter (listed as 1394 net adapter) is present and "working properly"
(2) a "?" is reflected, too, which lists "Ethernet Card".   Properties on this ethernet card says "The Drivers for this device are not installed (code 28).  To reinstall the drivers for the device, click reinstall drivers", but long story short, no drivers are found.

Little more background info...
The cable modem is plugged-in as it was prior to the crash and is a ethernet connection (ie the telephone plug lookin cord vs the USB ones), so I am thinking 1 of 2 things is happening:

1)  I do not have the ethernet driver and need to know where I can get it.  I tried http://support.dell.com
but do not see any such drivers for my system.
2)  Is there a conflict occurring with the network adapter and the ethernet card and that is actually my issue?

At the moment, I am unsure as to where to get the driver for the ethernet card and unsure if the ethernet card is in fact the problem.

Yes - I have two CDs.   One is the reinstallation disk for the OS.  The second disk is for "applications/ drivers"  I do believe.

If you post the model number for your dell, as well as the operating system, we might be able to point you to the correct link for your driver.

My system is a Dimension XPS Gen 2.  OS =  Windows XP.

Model of Network card.... Hmm.  Unfortunately, I can not supply that at the momment since the machine is home...  =/

Thanks much for your help.

Install the CHIPSET driver first.

Hi there,

Sounds like the driver for your network card is not installed. In my experience the Dell systems tend to come with 2 CD's one has the O/S and the other has device drivers and aps.

If you post the model number for your dell, as well as the operating system, we might be able to point you to the correct link for your driver.

Also if you open up your case the model of the network card would be handy although I think Dell has been sticking to Intel pro 100's lately.
