Ethernet card not working...
I am using a Inspiron 1200 laptop and as of yesterday, the ethernet is not working. I plugged it into another computer in the house and it works fine; technical support at earthlink told me it may be the ethernet card is bad. What do I do? Can I download something from here? Also what will I need to just do wireless instead of having to use the ethernet if it is not working? What would be easier and less expensive?

Are the link lights on either or both ends of the cable on (when connected to the I1200)?
How exactly is it not working?
Do you have a built in Ethernet card or is it PCMCIA (removable)? If the latter, it is easy to replace and you can replace it with a wireless card. An internal card is harder to replace. You would likely need to find an exact replacement. If you go wireless, you will need a wireless router or access point for a cable/DSL connection.

I have a 2wire router that includes DSL modem, router, firewall, wireless and 4-port switch. It is very complete. I also use a DLink router (no wireless or DSL modem). They both work very well. I suspect all the name brand routers will work well (Linksys, Netgear). Even the cheapy no-name models probably work fine.
