Ethernet Card

Last week my computor(Dell 4600) stopped detecting my ethernet card,(couldn't get online at all), after trying to reload drivers and all the other things you do, etc.  I went out and bought another ethernet card from Wal-Mart. The brand name is Linksys it is a 10/100Mbps PCI card. Well anyway after installing this in the same socket as the old one had been in, I was able to get back online.. The bad news is my internet connection is now EXTREMLEY SLOW, as bad as dial up or worse. I have cable with Road Runner service, but now web pages take forever to load, on websites that I have freqented in the past that loaded quickly.  Could this be because of the type or brand name card that I bought?  Are there differences in the cards due to brand name, as I have seen other cards that are more expensive. I have other empty slots in the back of my computor that look like a card can be clicked into the socket, should I try a different slot in case this may be the problem? Or is the slot that my card came out of the only one that is set up for an ethernet card.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Just want my net speed to get back to where it was which was approximately 1.5mb per sec....

bluemustang,

According to the Technical Specifications for the 4600, there are a total of three PCI slots. How many are actually available depends on what other PCI devices are installed. But I'm puzzled. I thought the 4600 shipped with an integrated 10/100 network adapter on the motherboard! Was there a problem with that device, or do not all 4600's come with it?

There should be nothing unique about the PCI slots. You might try another slot. You might also try resetting the BIOS to its default settings, as described in this Dell Support article. That will also re-enable the onboard Ethernet adapter. You should check for any other integrated devices that are not at their default settings, because you'll need to restore those settings after resetting all the BIOS defaults. See the "System Setup" section of the Service Manual for details.

thanks for the advice Jim.. I'll give it a try.. I did make 1 boo-boo.. I have a Dimension 4500 instead of a 4600, I typed the original post from work so I wasn't looking at what model it was at the time. And yes it came with a ethernet card, it just all of a sudden stopped recognizeing the card that came with the computor, acted as though it could not detect it at all.. It detected the new card when I installed it but I just have crummy net speed now..

I got it working!!!!!!:smileyvery-happy:  speed is now 4 mbp sec..  I bought another ethernet card from Stapels , cost 24 bucks , but it seems to do the trick alot better than the 12 dollar one I got from Wal-mart......
