Hi asdfghjxcvbn,

You may follow the steps below to check if the drivers are listed as installed in Device Manager :

  • Press 'Windows' + 'R' button on keyboard.
  • Type 'devmgmt.msc' in the Run box without the quotes.
  • In the Device Manager window, expand Network Adapters and check if the Ethernet controller is listed

If the driver is not present in the system and appears as Ethernet Controller under Other Devices with a yellow question mark, you may download/install the drivers from Here and restart the computer.

If the Ethernet adapter is not listed in device manager, you may load the BIOS defaults and enable the NIC by following the steps below :

  • Restart the computer and press F2 on the Dell splash screen to enter Setup
  • Press F9 to load setup defaults; highlight Yes and press Enter
  • Go to Advanced Tab and select Integrated NIC
  • Press the Enter Key to get the options and enable it

  • Press F10 to save changes and exit; highlight Yes and press Enter

Once the system boots into the OS, check in device manager and try installing the driver given above.

Hope this helps. Please reply with the findings.

Thanks for the response, Sundeep.

However, that seemingly wasn't the issue.  I followed all the steps as mentioned, but the NIC was already enabled, and restoring to defaults didn't work.  Further assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi asdfghjxcvbn,

Please post a screenshot of device manager with Network Adapters category expanded. Will take it further from there.

Hi asdfghjxcvbn,

As the Ethernet Controller is not listed in Network Adapters, please check under Other Devices. If it is present under Other devices, please try installing the driver. If it fails to install the driver, please share the Hardware Id of the device listed under Other devices. You may right click the device and click on Properties -> Open Details tab -> Click on Property and select Hardware Id and share the information here.

If the Ethernet Controller is not listed under Other devices as well, you may consider replacing the LAN daughter board. I hope your computer is under warranty.

Hope this helps. Please reply with the findings.

Hi ,

What is wrong with my Ethernet port ?

I haven't  any data  transport on the Ethernet port of my old PRECISION .

I have a orange led and nothing more .  The driver is off course well installed.

I changed my Windows and i have the same difficulty;

May the internal wiring be bad . ?

Hi  Sundeep B,

I use a old PRECISION (M50)   where i installed  two different XP SP3 and also a WIN 7. I got the same results.

When i have tried   'ipconfig /all'  i found my LAN connection  "disconnected".   The orange LED is of course always on. Only and only orange LED.  I am sur that the cable is good because it was be checked on a another DELL.

My WLAN works fine and i am using it for replying your post.     I did check again the BIOS and my LAN is "Enabled ".

All of the drivers are OK  unless  PCI MODEM (Other devices).  Where may i find a good driver for this PCI MODEM ?

Here is its Hardware Id :

PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_4D644243&REV_02

PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&SUBSYS_4D644243

PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&CC_070300

PCI\\VEN_8086&DEV_2486&CC_0703

And for my Ethernet device(3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet controller):

PCI\\VEN_1087&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_00D51028&REV_78

PCI\\VEN_1087&DEV_9200&SUBSYS_00D51028

PCI\\VEN_1087&DEV_9200&CC_020000

PCI\\VEN_1087&DEV_9200&CC_0200

As you know we have the LAN and MODEM ports on the left side of a M50.

That is why i am asking if there isn't a wiring problem just in this side of my M50.

I have even replaced the LAN daughter board with a very good one and i have the same results.

I am going maybe to check by myself this wiring but it is too difficult for me to disassemble the Modem+Ethernet module.

They seems be attached.

Where may i find please, a good guide to reach this point of this PRECISION ?

Thanks in advance for more assistance.

Sundeep, OP here.

Thanks for your help, and sorry for taking a long time to reply, but the ethernet was not listed under other devices. I guess it really is a hardware issue then?  If so, what's the next step as far as warranty goes?  If warranties automatically come with Dell laptops, I'm sure I am under warranty-- this computer is about 3 months old.

Hi,

@asdfghjxcvbn

Please Private Message the service tag and the name on the account (Click on my name and click on start conversation). I will check the information and will take it further from there.

@RANOSO

For Windows XP, you may download the drivers from Here -> Enter the service tag of your system ->  Select the operating system -> You will find the drivers for modem under Communications and Ethernet device under Network

Dell has not tested Precision M50 with Windows 7. However, you may follow the steps below for installing XP drivers in compatibility mode in Windows 7 and see if it helps :

  • Download/save the driver files as shared for Windows XP
  • Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties -- > Compatibility Tab
  • Select Windows XP from the list in the following image.

  • Click Apply -- > OK
  • Right Click the file and select the Run As Administrator option to install.
  • Follow the on screen instructions and restart the system after the installation.

Please reply with the findings. I would be glad to help you.
