Ethernet Controller Driver Problem And Other Drivers Too

I have a Dell Dimension 4700. It came with Windows XP, certain events happened, XP doesn't load like it should, and now I installed Windows 2000. I setup most of the drivers, but I have a problem with the Ethernet Controller. It says in the Device Manager that the driver hasn't been installed. So, I used AIDA32 to find out that the computer uses a Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. So I downloaded and installed the corresponding driver, but nothing happened, the error won't go away in the Device Manager and I can't connect to the internet.

Is the Ethernet Controller something else? And if it is, how do I found out what kind I have? If not, then what exactly do I need to do to get it to work?

Also, after installing the drivers for my nVidia GeForce 6600 GT OC, I got this error in Device Manager:
nVidia WDM Video Capture (universal) can't start (Code 10)
and
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller drivers not installed (Code 28)

Please, anyone help me as soon as possible

Try the drivers here

whenever you reinstall windows on a Dell you should install the drivers in the following order only.

1. Chipset
2. Video
3. NIC
4. Sound
5. the rest

Did you install the chipset drivers as the first drivers installed after loading Windows 2000?  If not try installing the chipset drivers first, then the ethernet controller drivers.   Download from the following site:

I tried installing in that order and it didn't work. My friend then told me to first uninstall then install the NIC drivers. Now, the ethernet controller doesn't even show up in Device Manager and AIDA32 can't recognize it.

Install the chipset driver in safe mode, put the chipset file on your desktop before booting into safe mode.

Ok, so I installed the chipset and the video drivers in safe mode. I couldn't install the NIC drivers in safe mode, so I went back to the normal mode. After I installed the drivers in the order you guys said, nothing happened. So, I tried numerous things. Then, in Device Manager, I clicked update drivers for the Ethernet Controller and I chose to get one from their list. So, I chose the Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection and they told me to locate a certain .sys file on the hard drive, which happened to be there because of the installing it multiple times. So, now after all that, the Device Manager now recognizes it as Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, but it now has a different error. It says that this device cannot start (Code 10). I tried installing the drivers every way I could think of, nothing worked.

Sometimes when the drivers are not installed in the correct order, the simplest thing to do is just start over.  Reformat, reinstall Windows, then install the drivers in the correct order.   Make sure you using Windows 2000 compatible drivers.

Try the chipset driver in safe mode, reboot, then the rest in Windows.

You may have to reinstall and use the sequence above.

Ok, so I had the EXACT same problem!!!  I had a problem with my keyboard not working correctly so I took my Dell Laptop into a geeky squad kind of situation and they had to do a crash and restore on my computer.  When I got it back, they had explained to me that they had installed all the drivers that were necessary.  However, every time I turned on my computer I would get an error message that explained that my ethernet controller drivers were missing and I wouldn't be able to get onto the internet.  Now, I don't know if this will work for you, however, I have a Dell Studio Laptop installed with 32Bit Windows Vista.  So what did I do?  Well, I went to dell.com searched "ethernet controller drivers download Windows Vista".  First, your message came up.  Sadly, I had to ignore it bc I was dealing with the same issues.  Secondly, I was given a list of Ethernet Drivers that matched my version of Windows.  I downloaded all drivers, then installed them.  When the message came on when I rebooted my computer that I was missing drivers, I selected "Locate Drivers".  It will then ask you to insert a disk or search for alternate options.  Choose search alternate options.  Then when it asks you to browse manually, you will browse "C:/dell/drivers" and then click 'ok'.  All of the drivers that you have downloaded will automatically fix the wall between you and your internet.  Then you will be able to log on.  I had the same problem, but even worse... did not have a password to my internet after this debacle and had to search endlessly to find a simple encryption key.  This may have nothing to do with your problem, but it sounded very similar and I could not sit idly back while you are probably pulling your hair out! Ha! Let me know if it works.
