Ethernet port light not flashing???

Hello everyone,

I've run into something that's not really a problem yet, but it sure is confusing me. While i was checking out the new video card my buddy purchased, i noticed that his ethernet port that the cable plugs into has two little lights that flash, as if to represent internet activity. Now he has the Dimension 4700, and i have the 4600. As far as i've noticed we both pretty much have the exact same setup. The only difference is that my connector doesn't flash like his does. Now what i'm wondering is if i don't have the lights... or if i do and theyre just burnt out... or do i have a hardware problem?? The funny thing is that i have never had internet connection problems until recently when i noticed this. For the past two days i've been battling on the phone with the RR techs and they told me to pick up a new modem. I'm going to hook it up tomorrow and see if the problem is resolved. I'm hoping that i'm just overreacting and it's something as simple as the 4600 model has a different connecting piece (sorry for not knowing the exact terminology, lol). But for now, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks a bunch,
 Clay

firefiter07,

If the lights on your NIC do not blink, this indicates that the NIC does not detect any network connection at all.  This could easily be a bad cable modem or dsl modem.  If you want to test your NIC, take your system to your buddies place and see if you get activity lights when you connect to his cable or dsl modem.

Well I went to Time Warner and picked up a new modem, and now my connection has been working perfectly ever since. But I am still not getting the flashing light from the NIC. I guess as long as I don't experience any more connection problems, its not that big of a deal. I hope... i hope... hope, lol.

Thanks again,

Clay
