ethernet port

Question

I can connect to internet via USB port but I cannot connect via ethernet port. I have conntacted Dell who tell me it is a software problem but have been no help. I am connected via broadband and have had my checked. I have a Dell Dimension 5150.

USB cable connected from computer to broadband router and this works but if I try to connect ethernet cable from computer to router i cannot connect

Connect from the modem via ethernet and shut down both units (modem and PC).  Power up the modem first, waiting about 2 minutes, then the PC and see what happens.   Post the results of an ipconfig /all   Start>Run>cmd type  ipconfig /all >> C:\ipconfig.txt   Go to the C Drive and post those results here.

I have tried what you suggested but still no connection. Okay, you are not getting an IP Address as I figured.  Google for a program called WinSockfix for XP and run it.  Post back to see if the wired connection has changed.

Look in the Device Manager and see if there is a Yellow Exclamation mark in there next to this device.  If not, I would now suggest unistalling it and letting XP reinstall after a reboot.

Your ipconfig output shows that you don't have DHCP enabled, and therefore you will never get an IP address.  Open Network Connections, right click your LAN connection and select Properties from the drop-down menu.   Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select it, and click on the Properties button.   Make sure that their is a check mark next to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and a check mark next to 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.   Steve

Repost the output from your ipconfig /all command.  The previous out put you posted showed that this feature was not enabled.  Did you change something?   Steve
