Event log error "4198" help (ip address conflict)

I am sure hoping someone can help me.  I am so frustrated!  My internet keeps dropping, reconnecting, or refusing to connect at all.  I ran the event viewer and have gotten as far as figuring out that I have this ip conflict "4198".  I need to know how to fix this!

I have a linksys router.  I have a Dell XPS laptop, and an IMAC.  The Mac never seems to lose the internet connection--I am confident it is my laptop that is the problem.  I also have a wireless printer on the network too.

I know it is a registry problem but I really need some help before I tear all my hair out!  Can anyone help me?

You can set Ipv4 ,and Ipv6.subnet mask should be automatically in the list, and gateway should be set at default.

After reading your post a second time i think i understand what you are saying now, have you power booted the router and modem yet?...unplug modem and router for 60 seconds, then plug the modem in first, then the router. When they power back on,try connecting. This usually solves the problem,i have to do this usually every 2 months.

Post back if you need further help.

Thanks for the reply--I have a question though.  Do I use Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or Microsoft TCP/IP vers 6?  Neither one of these match what it is asking for.....and also what about the subnet mask and gateway?  Do they stay blank?

Thanks so much for helping me with this.

Yes, I have to reboot constantly.  It is driving me nuts!  I have a feeling the culprit is a printer on my network.....just not sure how to change this IP address thing.  On this Ilv6 there is no subnet mask and gateway in there.  They are blank!

Oh yes, I have the button "obtain an IP address automatically" checked.  When I select "use this IP" that is where the mask and gateway are not there--blank.

Hit the reset button on the back of your modem(it is small and you will need a paper clip,or something that size) then unplug the cable line going into your modem, and remove the power cords from both modem and router.Wait 30 seconds and plug the cable line back into the modem, then the power line, then the routers. This will force it to get a fresh IP address.Post back if you need more help.

Well, that didnt work either.  However, I got to looking at the install options for my wireless printer....I had it going wireless to both the mac and the PC.. using the network cable I attached the printer to the router.  Now, when I look at my event viewer there are no errors like I have had in the past....could it be?  I can print from my laptop but the Mac wont print.....so now I have created another set of problems but I am going to reinstall the printer software on the Mac and see what happens.

Should I have had the printer wired to the router all along?
