Fax options through high speed Internet

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and am in the process of purchasing an Inspiron notebook. I need to be able to send and receive faxes and am wanting to upgrade to high speed Internet service and get rid of my current dial-up ISP and possibly the associated land phone line.  My question is whether fax options are possible through high speed Internet and through the Inspiron modem, and if so, how to set this up?  Any help would be most appreciated!

In a word, no.  Broadband internet doesn't reference a phone number at all -- it's pure networking.

Having said that, if you're getting DSL then chances are you'll have to keep at least minimal phone service on the line.

A service like www.efax.com would be a workaround, if you do a fair amount of faxing.

(note: This info is based on my experience in the US, your locale may vary in terms of DSL over dead copper)

Also just sending the document as an email attachment circumvents the FAX process and is faster.

John, in case you ever need it -- if you need to send to a fax machine, you can use an efax.com account and send e-mail with an attachment.  Their system will send the attachment to a fax machine.

Thanks for your response.  To use email for faxing, I am assuming you would scan in documents that needed signatures and attach to an email just like a regular Word file, correct?  In that case, what hardware/software would the person receiving the email need to have to read the file, other than MS Word?
