GX110 connection problems
3COM 3C920 integrated ethernet, driver version 5.0.2195.6601
Windows 2000 SP4, Linksys 4-port router, Sygate firewall, Avast AV
When system is 1st booted up, network connection is not available. Originally, we thought it a bad RJ-45 cable to router...then found that un&replugging the (new) cable after booting up makes the system respond with a connection.
@ this point we're thinking some hardware weak-spot, but now find that running the tcaudiag.exe brings up the Windows network disconnected error icon & message to the systray, which then goes away & connection is established. Seems unlikely that tcaudiag.exe would be fixing a hardware problem when it's run...
WoL is disabled in BIOS (problem existed when it was enabled), "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" unchecked in device properties, ...
Once connection is established, it stays active while using the system.
Any suggestions?

Our router is a Linksys BEFSR41 - no other physical switches in the network.
None of those settings changes the decribed behavior.
Upon initial system startup, trying to run tcaudiag brings up the error mess, "The Service Database is Currebtly locked. Please retry this operation later."
A couple minutes in (after some unprovoked HD activity heard) tcaudiag can be run, but the connection is not yet established.
Always dis&reconnecting the cable - either physically or by running tcaudiag NIC or Network test (which always ends in the system reporting, "Local Area Connection Network cable unplugged" temporarily), connection is established & continues to be maintained till reboot.
I know this info is very general & of little help to those with some knowledge. If some other utility or test would give you better info, please recommend.
Our next step may be to disable the onboard NIC & plug in another card to see how it responds,,,
thaNX much

Well, we've run Sygate from our main box through this router (present frimware v 1.44.2, Dec 13 2002) with no problems for over a year...
I'm almost wondering if the cable - a Belkin store-bought 25' RJ-45 - might be from a bad batch, as we exchanged the 1st one @ the store we bought it from.
Tried a laptop on this same line after realizing this issue & it connected OK.
I'll look into the DOS diagnostic disk...

After looking over your post the other PROBLEM you have is SYGATE FIREWALL which is interfering with your nic. Some Linksys firewalls have Norton Firewall or Zone Alarm Pro available as an option but has no provisions for Sygate. If Enforce zone alarm is on in the router then that is your problem. The firmware versions that end with Z have the zone alarm support in them. You must also determine if you have a version 1 or version2 router as the BEFSR41 version 1 cannot use version 2 firmware. I think 1.43 is the latest stable version.
You should get help from Linksys
http://www.linksys.com/support/default.asp
and Sygate.
People have been reporting severe problems with version 1.45.6 of the firmware.
There are No issues whatsoever with linksys and Good cables and 3C9XX onboard or PCI adaptors.
Bad cables will not negotiate 10/100 correctly.
The linksys likes to setup 100 meg full duplex with all of my dells.

Your software is corrupted or your cable is bad or both
Make a boot floppy that fully tests your card and gets an IP address from your router.
http://204.127.198.24/~megacyberdude/Makedisk.exe
Get a blank disk
copy the file
open a dos window
and type MAKEDISK A:

must not have any bad sectors.

Tried another cable...NG
Tried another card, but also had to remove; DirectParallel, WANMiniport(IP), WANMiniport(L2TP)&WANMiniport(PPTP)from [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
and then from Device Mnanager (couldn't uninstall them from DevMan without manually removing those reg entries...) to get rid of them
Also disabled any WakeUp related properties from the Local Area Connection Properties > Advanced options...
Now she's responding better, but y'know I can't resist taking that new card out & trying the on-board one without all those other drivers installed...

went back to on-board NIC, have switched to a NetGear MR814 (v1) router. Basically, if you can wait 1 -2 minutes after Windows (2000 SP4) fires up, all runs well. Haven't had the motivation to run the DOS tests recommended.
NEway, this ol' box performs pretty well over all. thanX for the interest ;)
