GX270 WinXP LAN connect problem
I installed a new GX270 running WinXP. Connected it to our LAN on a port that is attached to a 10Mbit hub. Everything is fine. Can browse internet, can access our Linux domain server. I then move this PC to a desk where an older Win98SE system had been working, using a different LAN port that connects to a different hub, one that is a 10/100Mbit/sec 3Com 16 port model. The GX270 with it's Intel Pro/1000 MT network interface correctly senses and uses a 100Mbit speed but I can't access the internet or login to our server! I changed nothing in the software in the move.
I tried setting the network interface's speed to a set 10Mbit/sec full duplex and this allowed me to access the server and the internet but everything ran r e a l s l o w that access the network. It was so bad that I reconnected the GX270 to the 10Mbit/sec hub port.
What's going on here? Is there some special requirements in wiring needed by the Pro 1000 MT? Is there something else I need to tweak in XP's network settings?

Cody,
I did try setting the speed in the device properties to 100Mbit full duplex and that didn't let me connect. Only setting it to 10Mbit/sec worked and that didn't work acceptably.
As far as I know the 3Com hub is unmanaged with no controls or settings possible.

If the hub is managed in any way, ensure that the port the system is connected to is also hard-set for 100mbit full duplex.

Droid,
thanks.. in my ignorance I didn't know that hubs were half duplex. I will try the 100Mbit half duplex forced setting and see what the results are.

If this 3com device you are connecting to is truly a hub the only valid forced settings on the system should be 100/half duplex or 10/half duplex. Hubs are not capable of full duplex operations.
Switches however are capable of full duplex and most are manageable. It is vital that both sides of the connection on the switch are set the same, or you may have a duplex mismatch. Auto-Auto is valid, and so is 100-full, 100-full. 100-full - Auto however is not valid and will result in a duplex mismatch and very slow transfer times.

I was finally successful in getting a good network connection when I manually set the device properties to 10Mbps/half-duplex. Everything works at that setting. I tried 100Mbps/half-duplex and could not get a good connection. The hub is a 3Com 10/100 16 port Officeconnect model (ca 1999). Could be the hub, could be the wiring? Anyway, it's working now. I think I'll look into replacing the hub with a modern 10/100 unmanaged switch.

Well we finally replaced our aged hubs with new Dell 10/100 switches. The problem I'd been having with the GX270 not working at any speed but 10Mb/half duplex continued so I contacted Dell and the replaced the motherboard which has the NIC on it.
The network connection is now full speed at the autonegotiated 100Mbit rate. It was the NIC all along.
