HELP!! Networking - unable to share files
I have got a Dell Dimension 4300 pc and a Dell 5160 Inspiron. The Pc has got a linksys pci card in and the laptop is wireless enabled with a Linksys wireless router the two computers are networked and I have access to the internet on both computers. However I have tried to share files and printer. The laptop has XP pro and the pc has XP Home. Both workstations are coming up under the same workgroup, however my laptop is unable to access any files from the pc, but the pc can access files from the laptop. I have configured all necessary firewalls and run the network setup wizard. The computers are reading each other because they can ping each other. Why can't I access the pc files on the laptop??? Is is because the pc is Home edition and the laptop is professional??????????

On your PC, if you launch a command window and type "net view \\pc" (where "pc" is the computer name of your pc), you should see a listing of the shared assets on the pc (i.e. disk shares, printers).
If it responds with "There are no entries in the list." then your shares are turned off on the pc; just reshare them.
Once you verify that the pc has active shares, run the same command on the laptop, and you should get a listing of the assets as well.
If you don't, that probably means that a firewall on the PC is preventing access to the share across the network; just double-check your firewall settings.

Amyhick, if your computers are all on the same router, then its really easy.. well unless you absolutely need it to be convoluted.
easy method-
go to computer 1, right click on my computer, click properties, click 'computer name', click 'network ID' give your workgroup a goofy name (like "amy's Network")-- click ok;
go to computer 2, repeat steps and give workgroup the same name, click ok
go to computer that has the files you need to transfer, right click on the folder, click 'sharing and security', click "enable sharing w/o using the wizard", and click ok
go to computer 2, and click 'my network places', click 'view workgroup computers' (on the left hand side- you'll see an icon for your PC that has the files on it), click on the icon for the computer with the files (you'll see the folder you shared), click on the folder (you'll see all the files), copy and paste/drag and drop whatever onto an empty folder on pc 2... done

I've got exactly the same problem. I've tried everything, but no chance. It only works after starting Windows in safe mode!! The reason for that behavior is unknown. Check if you can access your files on the pc in Windows safe mode. Unfortunately the problem will still exist.
