I have a Dell Desk top(dimension) that I'm trying to network with my laptop(inspiron). I have the network set up and I can access the files I want to share off of my laptop but the files I have on my desktop are not being allowed to be viewed or accessed while working on my laptop. When I click on my network place and view work groups I can see bothe systems are on the network. I can print just fine from my laptop( printer in directly hooked up to the desktop), but nothing else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using a wireless netgear router for my laptop. I didn't run into any problems installing the network, the install wizards on both machines seemed to work well.

Could you please tell us which versions of Windows are installed on each computer. Has file and printer sharing been enabled on the desktop? Are there any firewalls running on the desktop? If so, the firewalls must be configured to allow local network traffic. How that is done depends on the version of Windows and which service packs have been installed and/or on which particular third party firewalls are running. Rather than me writing out the possibilities for each possible scenario, it would be easier if you could provide information on which version of Windows, which service packs and which third party firewalls might be installed.

On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab of the Windows firewall. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Center, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic. This is important. Many people don't realize that these programs have firewalls.

Do you have folders and/or drives designated as shared resources? Note that you will not be able to share the Windows folder, the Program Files folder, or any folder under Documents and Settings, except the Shared Documents folder.

I'm currently having print/file sharing issues too. In running XP SP2 (both systems). In your reply to NorthRiver, you mention making sure 3rd party firewalls are configured to allow sharing. Are you able to provide guidance by which to do this? I have NIS 2004. Also, my inspiron laptop can ping my dimension desktop but my desktop can not ping my laptop. Lastly, unlike my desktop, my laptop will not show workgroup computer(s) (nor is access allowed for viewing).

It gets very confusing trying to deal with more than one person's problem in the same thread. Furthermore, I don't use or have the manuals for all possible third party firewalls. Please read the manual for Norton Internet Security. It will clearly tell you how to allow local network traffic or put a range of IP addresses in the trusted zone. If you can't find the answer with the documentation that came with your software, post a new message to start a new thread rather than replying to an existing thread.
