How do I network my desktop and laptop?

I have an 18mth old Inspiron 5150 laptop and a 4yr old Compaq desktop  I'm currently using Aol Broadband (silver)

How do I network them (what bits do I need?) and is is possible to go wireless (can I add a PC Card to my laptop) to save having wires dragging around my house?  (I intend to use the laptop upstairs and the desktop downstairs)

On any computer running Windows XP with SP1, disable the Windows XP firewall. It will not allow File and Printer Sharing. On computers running Windows XP with SP2, make sure that the Windows XP firewall has File and Printer Sharing checked off on the Exceptions tab. If you are running any third party firewalls, like those provided by such programs as Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee Security Suite, make sure they are configured to allow local network traffic

Yes, you can add a PCMCIA wireless card to your 5150. You could alternatively add a mini-PCI wireless card and take advantage of the built-in aerials. Have a look at this link to see where the mini-PCI card goes:

You can create a wireless network just by having a wireless LAN card in each PC (a peer-to-peer network), provided the PCs aren't too far apart (say 10 metres or so).  Much more than that, and you may need a wireless hub / router.  Here's an article on how to set up peer-to-peer:

Hope this helps rather than confuses.
