How to establish WPA?

Pretty strange, wonder why the WPA options are not available for you?  I'd initially setup my SSID to be broadcast, used a passphrase for WPA, and WinXP detected the network, I supplied my passphrase, and it connected just fine.

Thanks Catul.  I installed the rollup package and still no WPA option.   Other devices on my network are fully functional using WPA (but not with a Truemobile 1180).

The adapter is operational according to windows XP, but will not detect the wireless network.   Spent a couple of hours with Dell Support reloading adapter drivers and installation software to no avail.   The adapter still doesn't recognize the network, nor allows for WPA setting under the 'wireless network connection properties'.  WPA does not show as an option in the drop down list. Support says it may be the physical adapter and will be shipping a replacement.

I have my doubts, since no options for WPA can be displayed.  I suspect the Truemobile does not conform nor support WPA, but haven't been able to verify.

I am experiencing the same issue with the TrueMobile 1300.

I ran the update for it and still no option for WPA. I checked the users guide for it, and it says that it is compatible with WPA. Any ideas?

The XP Wireless Update Rollup Package you mentioned has two versions: a 32-bit and a 64 bit........how do I know if my system is 32-bit or 64 (I think it is 32 - Pentium 4 @ 2.5 GHz)?

i have TB1180 found something that updates the client manager...but it still won't allow wpa

i looked at the specs for the TB1180 and it said  that it is only wep compatible

i have a TB2300 Router which supports wpa

The 64 Bit versions still haven't completely rolled out yet. You most certainly have the 32-bit version.

Having the same problem with TM 1150

Found the latest drivers (reputed to support WPA) using the following search

There are 4 files: R69901.EXE, R69905.EXE, R699223.EXE and R69927.EXE

For some reason all of them say that they are for Windows XP, but only the first one includes the new driver. The others seem to be related to Client Manager, but I was under the impression that Client Manager is not to be used for XP.

I did a Google search and found some similar problems discussed on an MSCE forum. The "fix" seems to have been related to disabling conflicting hardware in the device manager, but this is my only Wi-LAN card.

Microsoft's Q826942 rollup helped solve some of my connection problems. Also Q815485,Q810020,Q819950,Q822725 or Q828940 may apply to your situation. (some of these my be contained in the rollup). I know what you mean by fighting with Linux config files since I used the command line driven Unix in my previous work. I use a Linksys WRT54G with my Inspiron 8500 and TM1300. I use WPA-PSK AES exclusively with very few dropped connections. In your wireless connection  Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties try unchecking Obtain an IP address automatically and check Use the following address and enter your IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway of your AP manually. You will also need to enter two DNS server addresses from your ISP. You can leave the DHCP server activated in your AP. This was probably the most helpful thing that I did to stabilize my connection. I have SSID disabled in my WRT54G. You also need to enable MAC filtering and limit your DHCP server to the number of clients that you have.

I have Q826942 and Q815485 already installed; the latter seems to be mandatory for WPA to work.

These are pretty interesting. None *exactly* describes my problem but 828940 (need to reboot to reestablish connection) is close to what was happening yesterday.

However after I switched to DHCP on the laptop the above problem went away. MAC filtering and SSID broadcast are enabled.

The symptoms of yesterday's problem are the same as what happens if I turn off SSID broadcast: the "staircase" icon (TrueMobile Client Manager v3.30) flashes green intermittently (about 1-2 second intervals) and Network Stumbler shows a strong signal (with a padlock on the icon), but the "Advanced" and "Connect" buttons are disabled in the Wireless Network Connection dialog (View Available...).

Things seem quite a bit better now, but still there is a problem that occurs only on rebooting: after a few minutes of network activity the connection drops, and Windows notices a "new" wireless connection. I don't need to reboot anymore to reconnect; this time the "Connect" button is enabled and works instantly. The connection seems stable for several hours after that. I don't like having to manually connect on reboot but it's a minor problem for now.
