How to go about setting up Wireless Internet

Question

I am trying out a new Dell Inspiron 1100. The guy told me that the only way to connect to the internet wirelessly is at a starbucks or an airport or a bookstore and at some schools...anywhere that is considered a HotSpot. I think that is a bunch of bs. I would like to know if there was a way to connect to the internet no matter where Im at without a land-based connection... (phone line, cable). What items would I need to do this if it is possible, and would I need an ISP also?

An ISP is an internet service provider. If you want internet in your house, you will need one. Once you have an ISP, you can consider going wireless. Broadband connections, in general are much easier to setup for wireless, although some dial-up connections can work as well.

You will most likely need to buy some additional hardware as well.

I have a cable connection at home. I need to hook my notebook up to the internet wirelessly so I can work on homework and stuff when Im on the road. Do I just need a signal or do I have to have my notebook connected through a phone line or cable line?

There are celluar internet services that will work *almost* anywhere, although the monthly fee is kinda steep

What you are asking for, wireless intenernet connectivity everywhere, is not currently available. It is becoming closer to reality, and in some places it can be done for a rather high price. See the following recent articles in PC Magazine:

for the most part you buy internet access (say like cable for your house) and then buy a device to make that signal wireless (with a range say of about your house).

there are cellular internet serviced that will work anywhere a cell-phone would ... but again, these are relatively pricey ... if you truely need to do work on the road though, this might be the best option. check out places like www.verizonwireless.com for details.
