how to "open a port"?

I have a TM 1184 router which works fine (most of the time...) and I have a PDA which is connected by WLAN to the router. Now I want to sync the PDA  (WM 2003) with the Inspiron 8500, which is also connected wireless to the TM 1184. This does not work (Innternet and email works fine). I heard that I need to

1. install NetBios protocol (is that correct?)

2. open some ports on the TM 1184, namely 990 999 5678 5679 and 7428

can anyone explain me how to open those ports ? I use the Web-Interface to configure the TM 1184. Does is have to do with "port forwarding"?

Are you sure it is not just the XP firewall software on the 8600 blocking your PDA?

No, I don´t use the XP firewall at all. But meanwhile I found some hints and explanations  how to open certain ports by "port forwarding" and finally received a hint that deep in the network settings of Windows Mobiole 2003 a certain box needs to be checked. Now everything works fine (knock on wood..) WLAN ist still far away from being Plug n play..
