How to transfer files via cross-over cable

Question

Hi, how do i transfer some of my files from my old PC to my new one? I dont have any routers/switch/hubs or any of that network device to connect my two PC, all i have is a 10 ft cross over cable. can someone please give me some advice on ow to set this up? thanx.

Basically, you want to enable file File and Printing on the two NIC cards, share the drives you want to copy to and from, and put both systems within the same intranet, or local network. Log onto each with an account that has Admin rights and that should do it.

Oh yea, don't forget to plug in the cable.

Did you share the Folders and/or files on each computer? Just enabling File sharing does not accomplish this. You have to share every folder or drive you intend to share.

i tried your method. and when i tried to ping my new PC from the old one it says request timed out and when i ping my old pc from the new one it says the samething. printer and file sharing are all enabled on both pc and both MS firewalls are disabled on my two pc.

yup, i shared my whole C and D drives ( a hand is underneath it) and still no progress. still cant ping. but file print sharing is enabled.

When you open the Sharing Tab for the C drive, what is the name of the Share?  Is it C$?  If so, you must give it a new share name such as C or OS or something other than C$.  The $ indicates it is a hidden share.  Now, when you create a new share you must giove permissions to the share.  since you are P2P crossover, just grant the everyone permission.  But be sure to take that away when you go back on line.

what i basically did was:   Right click MY COMPUTER> select SHARING AND SECURITY... > under the SHARING tab, on the NETWORK SHARING AND SECURITY section I put a check mark on SHARE THIS FOLDER ON THE NETWORK.   When i put a check mark on that, the SHARE NAME i put was OLDPC. also checked the ALLOW NETWORK USERS TO CHANGE MY FILES option.   about the permissions, i have no clue on how to do that. where should i go to configure this? and btw, im still receiving the REQUEST TIME OUT when i ping them each other. is this due to the permissions error?

XP Home or Pro and do you ahve a 3rd party firewall running such as Norton or McAffee?

i got XP home, and yes i have a 3rd party FW which is mcaffee. is my 3rd party FW has any connections to my problem? should i uninstall it?

Just shut it down for this process, or at least add the computers to each others safety zone, trusted zone, or whatever Mac calls it.

WOOHOO, IT WORKED!!!!! THAT WAS THE PROBLEM ALL ALONG!!! how ever i cannot open Program Files of my old pc from my new computer?

You would need to enable Remote Desktop for that operation and only XP Pro works for that .
