I guess this is a Stupid Question
Hello,
I feel stupid asking, but I've tried emailing the rep that sold me the computer and also
tried emailing support, but I haven't received an answer from either.
I just bought a Dell Dimension 2400 and I have an old Gateway 1.5 mhz, they will
be sitting right next to each other, what i need to find out, is what exactly do I need to purchase
in order to network these two together? The Dell has a built in 10/100 ethernet whatever lol.
Also, I have ordered DSL and the modem has gotten here but havent yet installed it, not sure
if that makes a difference or not in what I need for the network.
Anyone that can assist me would be SO VERY much appreciated, I haven't even setup the computer
or DSL yet because I'd like to get it all done at once :o)

If you want to share files, printers, and the dsl internet connection between the two computers, you first need to know if the dsl modem is an ethernet modem, a USB modem, or has both an ethernet port and a USB port. Assuming that it has an ethenet port, then you will need an ethernet card in your old computer (you can find PCI ethernet cards for less than $10 at places like CompUSA, OfficeMax, Best Buy, etc.) and a cable/dsl router. Most forum regulars would recommend a Linksys BEFSR41 router for about $40, although simiilar models from Netgear, D-Link, or Belkin will also be OK.
If the dsl modem is a USB only modem, then you will not be able to use a router and will have to use Internet Connection Sharing built into Windows. In this case you would still need an ethernet card in the old computer and you would need a cross-over cable to connect the two network cards together.
