I had no clue about this
So, in order for my internet to work it has to be connected to a network? I'm very new at laptop usage so I'm a bit confused. I thought the integrated wirless and modem were supposed to allow me internet connectiopn right away. If I do need to network, how exactly do I do that? I'm sure I buy a router, but what do I do after that?
Would it be better for me to just buy a wireless card? I travel so I need to know what'll benefit me in regards to that.

In order to get on the internet you will need to sign up with an internet service provider. Usually they will supply the modem. if not you will have to buy one. Then you can buy a wireless router to connect to the modem. If you have a wireless network card then you connect to the router wirelessly to get internet access. Without a wireless network card then you would have to connect with a wire to the router to gain access to the internet.

The only thing a wireless adapter in your laptop allows you to do is to connect your computer to a router with no wires. Desktop computers are usually connected to such routers using ethernet cables because they don't tend to be moved around much, but most laptops nowadays come with wireless adapters built-in. To get from the router to the internet, you still need the DSL or cable modem (sometimes routers are integrated into these modems, so these may be just one physical box), and then a connection to the internet from the modem (this is provided by the internet service provider in return for monthly subscription fees).
If you want DSL service, you have to contact your local phone company (DSL service is provided over phone lines along with your regular telephone service, and the DSL modem is hooked up to a phone line). If you want cable internet service, contact your cable provider (as the name implies, this kind of internet connectivity is delivered over cable along with programming for your TV, and the cable modem is hooked up to the cable line).
