I need help with a new notebook with a wireless PC card

I just bought my kid a new notebook with a wireless PC card.  Except it didn't come installed and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it.  According to the diagram that came with it, it seems to fit in what looks like a floppy drive.  But the computer doesn't recognize it and the software can't find it.

I am a complete idiot when it comes to computers and I am quite distressed that I just spent $1100 on a computer that didn't even have all the things I ordered installed.

Does anyone have any idea where this card should go, and if it does fit in what looks like the floppy drive, where is the floppy drive that I paid extra for?

I'm totally lost.

Could you tell us which notebook you're looking at? Also is the card a pcmcia or an internal?

if it's a PCMCIA card (or PC card) then it will be rectangular and "sealed" in plastic or metal for lack of a better word.  These cards will go into a small slot, usually on the side of the notebook (it looks somewhat like a floppy drive i suppose).  Insert it firmly ...  usually lights on it will come on once it's in far enough.  That part said, you will need to install drivers for the card before it will work.  If you got it from dell, you can download them from support.dell.com (click product support, then download, then enter in your system info -- then select network devices and pick the kind of wireless card you have).

Alternatively, if you have an internal card (it will not be encased and you will probably see a circuit board) you will need to install it under a small cover under your notebook.  Post back if it's this card and I'll give more info.

If you can't find the drivers, post back your laptop type and the type of the card (dell truemobil 1300 for instace)

Just you saying to set it firmly did the trick!  It just wasn't seated correctly.  As soon as I pushed it in the new hardware wizard popped up and I put the CD in and in about 2 minutes I was surfing the net!  Thank you!

Now I have another problem.  After about 5 minutes the darn thing said something like "preparing hybernation" then it went completely dead on me.  I can't turn it on at all now.

I've got it plugged in.  Maybe it just needs charging.

Sorry, I know I should be reading the manual.

But thanks so much for your help with the wireless card.

I got that working.  I just didn't push the card in hard enough so once I did that it worked fine.

It's very cool.  If I can figure out how to get it out of hybernation, my kid is going to love it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

usually it will auto-hibernate when the battery reaches around 3% in order to save your work (hybirnating basically saves all your ram to your HD and then powers down).    plug it in and then press and hold the power button till you hear it come back on
