Did you not have to re-install the ChipSet drivers?
Make sure you have setting 'Use DHCP to obtain TCP/IP address automatically'
Capture and report your
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.Txt so you can pick it up in notepad and do an edit COPY to paste here
Windows XP Home
Start | Run "CMD" press Enter
C: press Enter
CD \ press Enter
MD \DOWNLOAD press Enter
CD \DOWNLOAD press Enter
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.txt press Enter
EXIT press Enter
Now run something like Notepad and look in DOWNLOAD folder on the C: hard drive and then you can do
Edit | Select All
Edit | Copy
from the report. Then come to this forum and do an Edit | Paste (or Ctrl-V is the equivalent)
Nothing was said about re-installing the Chip-Set driver during the the installation of the new HD. I have now re-installed this driver from the Resource CD but I get the same result with the same messages as reported.
I do not have the setting, or I cannot find it, "Use DHCP to obtain TCP/IP address automatically". It does not appear in Control Panel/Internet Options/Internet Properties.
I do not know where to capture the IPCONFIG/ALL file.
Please excuse me for being so ignorant. After I sent the last message, I followed your procedure again and got a report. This was copied to a floppy and transferred to my other computer. It is pasted below.
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DELLDimension
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Another way to operate is 'Use DHCP to acquire TCP/IP address automatically'
Also, no Gateway address is showing.
What is the actual TCP/IP address of your access point (router)?
You may do an 'Add' to designate this address for your gateway.
You also need DNS operating to get to the internet on your computer.
Your original post said you cannot access your home page.
Can you connect to any webpage, such as google, yahoo, msn?
There are other web browsers you could obtain (have a friend download and copy/"burn" for you to a CD-R)
* FireFox
* Maxthon
* Bon Echo
* Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview
I use all of these but not the version 6 IE
Please excuse my ignorance and inexperience. I cannot follow your instructions because I do not find any reference to DHCP in Control Panel/Internet Options/Internet Properties/Connections.
How do I activate "Use DHCP to acquire TCP/IP address automatically"?
I do not have a router or a network. This computer connects directly through a dial-up connection. The address of the ISP is 207.248.240.25. How do I add this to the Gateway? As far as I know, I have never used a Gateway.
I have a DNS address and an alternate registered and as far as I know they are active. What must I do here?
I cannot access anything. Yahoo is my home page. I have tried many others such as MSN, DELL, Microsoft, Hotmail, etc. and nothing connects.
I have made a "my.txt report" on the computer that I am using to communicate with you, a Dimension 8400. These computers are not networked because they are normally in different locations. The 8400 also connects to the Internet using a dial-up connection to the same ISP. This report shows the IP Routing is enabled, DHCP is not enabled, no default Gateway is shown. The only difference that I see between the reports of the two computers is that IP Routing is Enabled on the 8400 computer that works and it is not enabled on the 8250 that does not work.
Since your last message, I have been in contact with my ISP and with Seagate. Both have helped me somewhat but not with the Internet search engine problem.
I have installed Firefox but it is useless. It gives the message, "Server not be found. Firefox cannot find the server at www.microsoft.com".
When I try to connect to a different web site, I receive the same message as IE6, "Cannot start the search engine".
There is a failure in the system that I cannot locate that is preventing the search engine from starting.
IPCONFIG still shows that IP Routing is not enabled but now shows a Gateway connection.
I had been hoping that your Firefox suggestion would solve my problem, but no luck.
Since you say that you are not familiar with IE6, would it be possible for you to pass this problem to some who does have experience with it?

I followed your directions but I cannot access the Internet since IE6 cannot start the search engine.
I am able to communicate with you only because I am using a second computer.
