Inspiron 1100 net connection

 Has anyone else with an 1100 had problems connecting to the net? I connect through a cable modem. I plugged the ethernet cable in (its the Broadcom 440x) and set the connection up but it absolutely refuses to work. I know it can't be the cable or the modem b/c it works on this pc. I've got everything set to automatically detect, it seems it should be working fine but there must be SOMETHING in the settings that I've messed up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
