Inspiron 1150 - not recognizing wireless router
Would love some guidance on this:
I have an Inspiron 1150 with a Dell Wireless 1350 (802.11 b/g) Internal card. My home network includes that computer, that card, along with a high-speed modem (brand is Speedstream, provided by Yahoo DSL) and a wireless router (brand is NetGear WGR604 v5).
I have been able to consistently connect to the internet using this wireless network, but then for some unknown reason was unable to. Having had one-off connection problems in the past that were solved by using NetGear's tech support, I phoned them...after an hour or so of troubleshooting, we were unable to restore the connection. Toward the end of the call, I turned on a different laptop (one I bring home occassionally from work) and it was able to connect to the internet right away. At that point, the NetGear technician suggested the problem was most likely w/ my modem or computer. The next day, I brought my (home) laptop to two internet cafes...when I hit "view available wireless networks," it was unable to find the wireless networks in both cafes.
I've scanned some similar posts in this forum for ideas, but nothing seems to directly apply to my problem. For example, I do not use encryption on my home router/network.
I just re-installed the NetGear router software, but still no success.
Any advice for me?
Thank you!!

Have you tried power cycling the router, or using the reset button on the back of the router? Do you have any firewall software installed that may be blocking the connection? Are you getting an IP address from the router?

Thanks, Steve, I appreciate the guidance.
I re-set the router, but I'm still unable to connect wirelessly to the internet. After I re-set the router, I had to connect to it (w/ a wire) to set it up (e.g., give it my ISP login, etc)...however, after setting it up, I wasn't able to establish a wireless connection. Following your advice, I had disabled my McAfeee firewall before going though this process. As for your other question, I'm not sure if I'm getting an IP address from the router...honestly, I'm not sure how to figure out if I am or not.
Again, even when I'm at a coffee shop, my computer is unable to recognize any wireless networks when I hit "view available wireless networks," which tells me I may have a problem w/ my wireless card. Is that possible/likely? In the past, when I hit "view available wireless networks," 6-8 would come up.
Thx!!
Anthony

Does your wireless network adapter show up in Device Manager when you expand the listing for Network adapters? Is your wireless network adapter turned on (the Fn F2 key combination should toggle the wireless radio on and off)?
