Inspiron 5521: issues with WiFi

I have a brand new Inspiron 5521 (i7-3537U 2.00 GHz – 8 GB RAM) running Win8 (64-bit), and I’m having issues with the WiFi connection coming and going. On my home network (connected to fiber with 8 other phones, tablets and laptops connected without any issues), internet will hang for a few seconds, hang, and the come back again. It’s easy to follow when downloading files (e.g. from Dell support) or loading heavy pages.

I’ve upgraded the network card driver (now running Intel Centrino Wireless-N2230 version 15.8.0.5, 4-25-2013), but it doesn’t help. Running the network card test works fine sometimes, and sometimes it fails on ‘LAN Test’, ‘Internet test’ and/or ‘Data transfer verification test’. And then I run it agail and it works fine.

Any suggestions?

Hi svendufva,

Check if the wireless works in Safemode with networking:

Hi Rajesh,

Thanks for your prompt reply!

I tried booting in safe mode (with networking), and I have the same problem as when booting in regular mode. E.g. when visiting sites with heavy pages, a couple of pages will load really fast, and then for no apparent reason the same type of page will hang. Or when downloading large files from www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/ServiceTag/, the first say 15-20 MB will load really fast, and then it hangs a 0 kB/s.

I'm suspecting something is wrong with the wireless network card.

PS Couldn't get shift-F8 to work, so I used msconfig and set Safe boot to Network on the Boot tab.

Hi svendufva,

You may try uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card drivers.

Uninstall:

  • From the Start screen, swipe up and tap the All apps icon.
  • If you have a mouse, right-click on the Start screen and then click All apps.
  • Once on the Apps screen, scroll or swipe to the right until you see the Windows System heading.
  • Tap or click on Control Panel, located under Windows System.
  • Windows 8 will bring up the Desktop and automatically open the Control Panel.
  • Tap or click on the Hardware and Sound link.
  • In the Hardware and Sound window, click or tap Device Manager, located under the Devices and Printers heading.
  • Under “Network Adapters”, right click “Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 2230 ”, click “Uninstall”.
  • Check the box “Delete driver software for this device”, click ok and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall.
  • Restart the computer.

Install:

Interesting that replies I have written that - besides additional details about the problem - are critical of Dell are deleted by the moderator. Repeating the same type of have-you-rebooted advice over and over again and deleting critical comments is easier than resolving what seems like a common problem.

Guess I should have listen to the advice I got that Dell quality reputation is a thing of the past...

Dear i was also having the same problem and my laptop was in warranty i installed windows and drivers so many times tried to find the solution on forums also but did not solved my issue than i opened my laptop and and it was under warranty...Just open the screws near battery and under the battery than flip over and unlock the keyboard screws lift your keyboard up and you will find wireless network adapter under the keyboard. Here is the link to de- assemble your laptop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MVQR3d6jts
i was shocked to see that the cables were not connected with the card than i connected the cable and assembled my laptop and turned it on and i was surprised that my issue was solved and tell you one thing that i bought it brand new and was never opened before i do not know how DELL can be so careless about it..but thanks to god my issue was resolved try it by yourself too or took it to a repair shop if you don't have the tools and tell him to check the cables for wireless card ...hope that your issue will be reolved....

Hi,

You said your wifi some times connect and some disconnect frequently, then how a cable is completely not connected, as in this case, wifi should not work at all. Actually me to facing exactly same issue of wifi disconnecting frequently on my inspiron 15 3537. And I could not find any solution on net. Even Dell customer care could not help me. I already tried updating driver etc.

Please suggest. Thanks in advance
