Inspiron 700M laptop "Network Cable Unplugged"

But it *is* plugged in! I just received my Inspiron 700M laptop and cannot get in onto my pre-existing home network. I am running Windows XP Pro, have the Broadcom 440X integrated controller and purchased a new Cat 6 cable. At first I thought the cable was dead, but I test it on other machines and it was fine. The device is reported as working properly and I have disabled my IntellPro Wireless device. I have a five port Linksys workgroup switch. Whenever I plug in my cat 6 to the switch and then to another computer, the port lights up and is fine, but if I plug the same cable (or even one of the exisiting cables from the rest of the network) into the laptop the port light goes dead. So, I have ruled out the cord and the various ports, which I have tested each with the same results as above. I have disabled the Windows Firewall. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Have you tried running the Diagnostics on the network adapter (Broadcom Advanced Control Suite in Start > All Programs)?

C-D,

If the XP Device Manager is reporting the device to be OK, and yet no sign of a signal appears when you connect a known good cable between the 700m and the switch, you need to contact Dell Support ASAP.

Don't forget about the 21-day deadline after the date the system was invoiced for the "no-hassle" return policy. It sounds like there's something wrong with the wiring, or with the integrated adapter.

Hi Jim,

XP is reporting that the device is working properly, but known good cables do not work on the laptop, but work prefectly fine on three other machines in my network. I tried to contact tech support today via email, which was a disaster, with their reponse telling me I need to go to the online "wireless" guides. When I wrote back saying I wasn't installing a wireless network, they were sorry that I was displeased but just wanted to let me know about their wireless techinicians. I've now been on hold with support for at least 20 minutes. Oy vey. This is not the Dell service I remember from four years ago when I bought my Precision.
