Inspiron E1705 Wireless Painfully SLOW

I just received an E1705. If I connect to my Linksys WRT54G router via a wired connection, all is well. But, when I try wireless, my download speeds are barely above a dial-up connection. Upload speed remains good, even on wireless. I noticed down in the system tray that the signal starts at 56Mbps, but soon drops to 18 or so. Then it will go up & down between 18 & 5Mbps.
I was using a D-Link router earlier today, but had the same problem that I'm having with the Linksys.
Was on the phone with tech support for 1-1/2 hours, but no help.
I also have a Inspiron 5100 with a D-Link wireless card. There is no problem with the wireless connection on this laptop, which leads me to believe that something isn't right with the Inspiron E1750. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Please try to register the MAC address of your laptop on the router..Hopefully it would fix the issue..

Yes, the wireless card is a 1390. I don't know how to register my mac address on the Linksys.

Please let me know and I'll give it a try.

Thanks!

Now if you have done everything above, you can also try reseating the wireless antenna of your system.  If you dont know how, you can go to support.dell.com and they have a guide there on how to do it. :-)

hI,

can you tell me how many pc are using the same router at one time?? sometimes cordless phones can cause interference to the wireless signal when used near your laptop causing slow connections or even disconnection. with regards to MAC address, you can go to your router page by opening an IE browser, type in their 192.168.1.1 at the address bar.  then your router page will open.  Some settngs can now be changed.

I have 5 other devices connected to the router, 4 are wired. I usually surf the internet using 1 system at a time. No cordless phones. Tech support had me change some router settings, but that didn't help. The tech asked me to try the wireless at another location, so I went to a local bookstore that has free wireless this afternoon.
I had the same problem there. Down in the system tray, the wireless icon starts at 54Mbps and quickly falls to 18Mbps. From there it starts to jump between 5Mbps, 11Mbps, back up to 18Mbps, then back down again. I even moved around to different locations in the bookstore, but that didn't help. Tech said that he would send me a new wireless card if I couldn't get a good connection at another location. I sent him an e-mail, and am waiting for a reply. I'll let you know if the new card makes any difference. If not, I'm afraid the E1705 will be going back to Dell.
