Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG Users - Please Read
First, I am the first to admit that support forums tend to have a higher than average number of problems; people whose systems work, don't seek out help for them. That being said, I've gotten the impression that an even higher number of users are having trouble with the Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG adapater. So, I personally would like to get an idea of who here has had problems and who here has not had problems. In the meantime keep the pointless conversation down and the troubleshooting up.
So, I am gonna give my information, and quickly what I have tried. I am going to try and keep the information as easily understandable as possible. If anyone else has had problems with their 2200BG I would ask you try to use a similar format as the one I am using here. Any ways, here goes.
System Information:
Model: Inspiron 8600
BIOS Rev.: A11
WLAN Driver Rev.: A08 (Intel v.9.0.0.61)
OS: Windows XP SP2 (Clean install)
WLAN Information
Router: Linksys WRT54G v2
Firmware: Alchemy 6.0 RC5a (3rd Party Firmware based on Linksys 3.01.3)
Channel: 11
Security: None (cause if you get close enough to my house to connect... you will be arrested by military police!!!)
MAC Filtering: No
Other Wireless Devices
Device 1: Linksys WGA54G (Firmware 1.1) connecting XBox
Device 1 Problems?: None
Device 2: Dell Truemobile 1300 mPCI
Device 2 Problems: None
Other relavant information:
- Have used Dell Truemobile 1300 mPCI with this network with no issues
- Have tried going back to Linksys Firmware 3.01.3, did not work
- XBox stays connected when Laptop drops the connection
- Signal strength reported as Excellent before connection being dropped
- Wireless network CANNOT be seen once connection dropped; adapater must be disabled / re-enabled
- Linksys HGA7T High Gain Antenna used on router
- Problems began occuring IMMEDIATELY after installation
- Previous WLAN card (TM1300) and Router have worked for over a year without issues
Symptoms
- Frequently dropping connection to the WLAN; once dropped, no wireless network can be found
- Dropped connections are random; was able to download a 266MB file without trouble. At other times, casual web browsing is interuppted by drppped connection.
- Occasional speed slow-downs before dropped connection; dropping from 54Mbps to 1Mbps
- Longer than normal time for DHCP IP acquition (takes FAR to long to get an IP); I am talking several MINUTES here
Steps Taken to fix problem (without resolve):
- Format, fresh install of Windows XP SP2
- Disabled WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration, a.k.a "Microsoft Client"); using Intel software only for configuration
- Disabled Adapter Power Management
- Uninstalled / Disabled Intel PRO/Set Software Suite (using WZC for configuration)
- Different Channels
- Different SSIDs
- Different Router Firmware
- Factory Defaults on Linksys Firmware
- Increased router transmission power (via 3rd party firmware)
- Reseating the WLAN card in the mPCI slot
- Router Assigned Static IP (aka Static DHCP)
- Manually Assigned Static IP (configured via Windows)
Current Status:
- Spoken with Dell Support, have a Dell Dispatch Number to get the card replaced
So, that is where I stand.

Take that as you want, but I'll stick with my Truemobile.

I did recently read a knowledge base article (see details here) that routers/access points which do not support PSP (Power Saving Polling) can cause speed degradation problems and dropped connections with Intel PRO/Wireless cards. However, I would ASSUME that if a router is Centrino certified than it would support PSP. However, and this is a HUGE HOWEVER, the solution recommended is to disable power management. This step did not work for me, and has not worked for many people; though it has worked for some. While my router did not come with a Centrino sticker, the WRT54G model is now certified; whether or not that applies to a specific version of the WRT54G, I do not know.
Interestingly... I am at an Embassy Suites hotel with wireless and I got bored and reformatted my system (yes I travel with a Windows XP Setup disc and my external hard drive; yes I know I am a nerd). For kicks, I installed the 9.x drivers from Intel (drivers only) and so far... no disconnects. The WLAN in the hotel is 802.11b (11Mbps). So..................... who knows. We will see when I get back to my house and can re-test with a 802.11g network. I might try setting my home router to 802.11b mode for testing as well to see if this is a 802.11g only problem.
I'll eventually report back; Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

The problem with the card or the drivers probably is a problem with the power saving "features" of the centrino system, since the connection would die after the notebook sat idle for a period of time. If I was playing a game or downloading or something, it would seem to last longer. Maybe, even though we are disabling the power settings in the card driver, there is still something that is forsaking the wireless connection for battery life?
I'm not a software engineer so I don't know what is wrong with these drivers. Still, I wonder if the open source linux driver (that was made by consumers, not intel) works any better under linux.

So, needless to say I am very perplexed now. I did recently update the firmware; a newer beta release of the Alchemy firmware from Sveasoft I am running. However, if you have kept up with the posts, I had troulbe with the from the latest Linksys firmware as well.
As FYI: The drivers being used are the latest 9.x drivers from Intel, installing ONLY the drivers. The PRO/Set software was never installed. As I mentioned, I did do a format while on the road. Some things I did differently this time was:
- Used the latest chipset drivers from Intel; 6.3.0.1007. Previously, I was using the 5.x chipset drivers from Dell.
- I used the native bluetooth drivers with Windows SP2. Previously, I was using the WIDCOMM A05 drivers from Dell.
- Installed the lastest Notebook System Software from Dell. Previously, I was not using any NSS software.
All three of these things REALLY raise my eyebrow and I never thought about previously. As such, for those reading this, please post with what versions of the chipset drivers, bluetooth drivers(if applicable) and if you are using the NSS software.
Thanks. I may do some testing this weekend doing clean installs with carying combinations of the above software to see what happens.

The randomness of the problems people are having is really driving me insane. It seems independent of routers being used, firmware, at times even driver independent. It is even configuration independent. The only commonality is that we all have the same issue... dwindling connection speed, and lost connections all the while having an excellent signal to the router. Heck, we can be within 2 feet of the router and still lose the connection.
ARGH. I find it interesting a Moderator to date hasn't commented on this subject. I mean, not too many threads make it to 5 pages without at least ONE comment from a moderator.

Anyway, I am just writing this all off to bad driver support and how intel puts marketing before quality. I'm a lot happier with my Truemobile.

Here is the icing on the cake, I have been going back and forth with Dell's Tech Support in email about the Intel 2200 BG and also with Netgear and in hear in the forums. Finally they ship me a new Card, Oh Oh what's that? Did I hear you correctly, after 10 plus emails, and 2 weeks time frame they finally ship me a new card. Yes they did, But wait a minute oh NO, its the wrong card, and after 45 mins on the phone wit support there shipping me another one, on Monday to be delivered on Tuesday, I have to agree that NO moderators are reading this forum. IHMO why are they not reading it, simple I say, because NONE of them understand the technology and DON'T want to understand, if we ignore it long enough it will go away. Well I am off to call Customer Support for compensation for all my emails and hassles. Mite as well put the phone on speaker next to my bed. Oh Cade, tried the latest drivers and see no difference at all, thank ALL of YOU for the help/assistance. At this point I am going to MAKE DELL SUPPORT do there job.

I came to work to do some work tonight and brought my laptop. At work, I have added a WRT54G v2.0 with Alcehmy Firmware (exact same as home) to the existing network. Granted, the Linksys is in effect acting as an access point, but it works for testing nevertheless. So, the problems exist at work as well. However, the main router on the network (which handles the actual routing, NAT, firewall, DHCP, etc), a D-Link DI-604, did show some VERY INTERESTING items in the log.
So, what is so interesting??? How about 4 pages worth of log entries related to my laptop getting an IP lease??? In 30 Minutes my laptop leased the same IP TWENTY-FIVE TIMES. No other computer on the network does this. The lease time is 3 Hours so the laptop should not be renewing its IP that frequently. In the time I was copying the log entries, the card made two more leases! Now, I am not a network expert by any means, BUT SURELY this cannot be normal. As far as I can tell, there is not pattern to the leases. Here is a copy of the log entries:
