Intel Wireless 2200BG - Low signal quality everywhere

I have a Intel 2200BG in my Inspiron 8200, and I'm using the Intel software to control the card (I have also tried with the normal Windows manager too). Everywhere I go, close to the router, medium to router, the connection is always poor, or fair, sometimes good - but never Very Good or Excellent.
For those of you using the Intel tray icon, it only ever goes green on the base arrow, and one arc.

The strange thing is that Windows network window will report Full strength (or generally 4 to 5 bars), while the intel tool is always on good. Now the speed can still (in the window anyway) stay at 48Mbps sometimes 54Mbps, but because it can vary a lot at times, I tend to think that the signal quality has something to do with it. Also strange is that the Intel application itself, when searching for Wireless routers, will show my router at full strength, but when I connect, it's poor/fair.

I am using the Intel drivers from the Intel website.

Anybody get their card working best at all times? (I tend to trust Intel reports more than Windows)

Update: When I reboot, it starts at Excellent, then it nose dives after about 20 seconds. Also, unlike a lot of the other posts, I rarely experience a disconnection.

what I did is uninstall the intel proset software, let windows manage it and use the older driver on the intel site 8.1.0.26. I kinda have your same problem.

I have a similar problem with my laptop 700m, which has the intel pro 2200bg.  i will try uninstalling the intel utility and let windows handle it and see if that helps.  My router is a netgear wireless.

Does any one have better suggestions?

I usually find Windows to report a higher signal quality than thet Intel one - whether it's true or just Windows being "optimistic" is hard to tell, so it will give the illusion of working better.

For some of the Netgear routers and Intel Wireless adapters, it is best to make sure you have the latest firmware for your router.  You can see a similar thread.

I did what some one on the forum suggested.  Uninstall Intel's wireless utility and let windows utility handle my wireless conncection.  That didn't seem to work.  I then recheck the exact settings and found that I mistype one letter in my SSID setting: on my router was a capital letter and I typed it as a lower cap.  Now everything seems to work fine.
