Intel(R) Pro/100 VE network adapter and timeout connection on Dimension 4600
I have a Dimension 4600 running Windows XP Home with an Intel(R) Pro/100 VE network adapter. I am accessing the internet via RoadRunner with Time Warner Cable. If I am away for a few hours and come back, I must log off and log back on to access the internet. I have spoken with Time Warner and my external modem has not lost it's connection - apparently the network card looses the connection with the modem. I have check in control panel and do not have any hibernation choices set - all are set to never. I checked properties on the network adapter and and unselected the option to allow the adapter to hibernate. This did not help. My next plan of action was going to be downloading a new driver (mine is version 7.0.26.0 - dated 03/04/03), but under my specific service tag for my computer - the Intel Pro/100 VE isn't listed. I do see several updated drivers for this network card when I search in general, but when I check system compatability, the Dimension 4600 isn't listed so I'm leary about downloading them. Any thoughts? Again, my modem is fine, it's the computer breaking the connection to the modem that's the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Try going to the Intel website for your adapter driver?
It tends to have the most recently updated drivers.
They're more adapter specific, rather than system(computer)specific.

Do you have Windows XP SP2? If you go to www.microsoft.com and hook up with their updating of the operating system, and choose custom, not just critical, updates. Eventually you will see an Intel Pro/100 VE network driver come up. That should be your latest. Also, you should take advantage of the Dell provided options on the Dimensions and Inspirons to check on software and hardware. One of the reasons I love Dells.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did download a new driver from the Intel website and now see more options under the properties for the card, but it didn't help. I went to the Microsoft site - I do have Windows XP SP2 - I even have an account set up for my particular computer and for the dimension 4600 under the network card downloads, the Inel Pro/100 VE wasn't listed.
Thanks,

Make absolutely certain that your external modem is functioning properly. Do you have another computer that you can connect to it?
Is this the driver that you downloaded and installed from the Intel website?:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=407&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Home+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go%21
If you do these things and still have the problem, you might need a new network card. Is your computer still under warranty?
