Try using System Restore to go back to a point before the Norton Updates were installed.  If this fixes the problem, I would give serious consideration to gettiing rid of all Symantec software (Norton) and getting something that has a better record of reliability.

I had symantec (Norton Internet security) running for whole 2007 and never had such problem in past. I just ran live updates and could it be the reason for internet nont working?

I will remove symantec and let you know the results, soon. Thanks,

Hi

Following Steve's advice, I ran the 'System restore'  but it gave me an error messsage -"An unspecified error occured during system restore".

Please advice how do I further resolve the internet connectivity issue.

Thanks,

Since we aren't really certain that the Norton Update is responsible for the problem, I'm hesitant to suggest uninstalling Norton to see if that fixes the problem.  Sorry the simple solution of System Restore doesn't work.  First let's try to troubleshoot this problem further.  On the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

First try the following:

Go to Start > RUN > type “cmd” then hit enter > then type netsh winsock reset and then hit the Enter key.

If that doesn't fix the problem, see if the following helps solve your problem:

http://slees.net/2006/09/25/ip-169254xx/

(Note, don't try the winsockfix program suggested in that article as it is not designed for Windows Vista)

When I go to cmd and type- 'netcash winstock reset' and hit ENTER it says -

" The following command was not found: winstock reset." in the cmd screen.

please advice.

In the above reply I misspelled, please read it as netsh winstock reset

You are still spelling it wrong - netsh winsock reset  (winsock - NOT winstock)

Thanks for the spelling correction steve!

I enetred it correct this time (netsh winsock reset) and below was the reply in cmd:

' The requested operation requires elevation. '

Please advice.

Geez - You would think by this version Microsoft would have gotten rid of these obscure seemingly non-sensical error messages.  The following tells you how to overcome this issue:

Thank goodness for Google.

Steve,

I could get rid off the 'Elevation required' error in cmd following your link for it. I followed your advice on netsh winsock but still problem didn't resolve.

So I followed the 'regedit' link you gave and did all the steps to get rid of the 169.154.... But unfortunately still the ipconfig is SAME. It still shows 169.154.X.X.

Please help.

Hi
Wanted to get some advice here. I have a XPS 710 which has run without fault for about a year. I recently changed cable providers and the system worked fine running through a Linksys cable modem. I wanted to re-establish my wireless network and connected up my Linksys wireless router, now I didnt have time to install the software so decided to return the connections to their original ie running via the cable modem directly to the desptop. This worked ok for about 24hr upon which the desktop can only see the local connection. I tried ipcongig/renew and get the cannot connect to DHCP error, the IP address is listed as 619 which I guess is bad. I just wanted to get some pointers on what to do next, re-install the network drivers? If I need to re--install/ create a new connection how do I do it? Sorry to be dumb but wanted to fix this easy.

Thanks for any help

Cheers
David
