internet connection via inspiron

I just bought a Inspiron E1705 with all the bells and options and xp. It has a built in wireless card.
At home it is always connected via cable modem. the connection however , is slow as a turtle. i realized it was trying to connect both via wire and wireless so i disabled the wireless. it did not go well and it either ran slow or it got disconnected.

i called tech support and they also walked me through disabling the wireless connection. the same result.

for now i have disabled the wired connection and am connected via wireless at 54g speed. what a waste?

anyone please has any idea how to fix this before i return this laptop. ? i had no problem connecting with my desktop connections as it was probably a smarter machine.

thanks

Need more information

Router brand/model?
Internet service provider?

More specifics than just "all the bells and whistles", that's not very informative. Which of the three wireless card options? (Intel 3945, Dell 1500, and I think the other is Dell 1390?)

You said you disabled wireless, then talked to tech support about how to disable wireless - why did you have to have them walk you through it if you already knew how?

Why disable the wired connection? Why not just unplug it?

It sounds to me like wired connections do not work but wireless works fine? I have to admit, while that is what it sounds like you are saying, I'm kind of surprised since 90% of users who have problems with one of the two have wireless problems but not wired. :)

Router brand/model? Linksys wrtp54G
Internet service provider? Time Warner Road Runner Cable modem Motorola

Laptop: Inspiron E1705 9400 T2250 2GB of Ram XP Media

1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 440x10x10/100 integrated controller
Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini Card

I thought it was also strange why the tech support guy wanted me to disable the wireless again to be sure.

i just changed the jack wire from router to computer and also plugged in a different router port. no difference.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me or send me the proper setting for the internet connection. I should have been able to connect the cable connection jack and get going without any hassles. I think someone at the factory has fooled around with the setting. the laptop seems to be working fine and is pretty fast.

many thanks,

ag

All I can think of is to try the following:

Attempt a direct connection between your cable modem and laptop, in case the router is faulty. I've had lots of problems with WRT54G units running stock firmware.

Make sure you're using a good Ethernet cable.

Ensure that the Ethernet interface (the Broadcom 44x) is set to obtain an IP address automatically.

It SHOULD be working without any settings changes, the defaults should allow operation without any configuration changes in your setup.
